Our girl crush SZA is coming in January next year, here are just some of the reasons that you need to invest in tickets or alternatively – try and win some from us!
Her genre is soulful magic
Solana Imani Rowe who goes by the stage name SZA pays homage to well known Wu-Tang Clan rapper, RZA. The letters come from The Supreme Alphabet and combined together her name stands for one’s own savior, knowledge, and Allah. This reference comes through in her music as well which is an absolute spiritual vibe. What also comes across in her music is brutal honesty, the stuff that you wish you could put into words and feel comfortable saying, SZA says it. With lyrics like, “Young savage girl, lost among the lily pads” you know she gets what it’s like to be a woman trying to make it through everyday life.
She’s already killing it
In the short time that she’s been around we’ve been blessed with two self-released EPs’ and one album already. The hard work has paid off as well as just last week she was nominated for five Grammys. She’s also on the same label as Kendrick Lamar, Top Dawg Entertainment, which has proven for some fantastic collaborations. One of my favourites is “Doves In The Wind” which is essentially about vaginas and how people have much more to offer than just sex. It makes for some critical listening.
Her music is about us
Claiming her influences as a combination of Lauryn Hill, Ella Fitzgerald, and Jamriqui, her music combines a soulful voice with experimental chillwave. Her sound would be similar to The Internet, Solange and Jhene Aiko. She says though, she just wants to make music and the genre, the comparisons, and the pigeonholing into RnB don’t matter to her. If anything, she wants people to like her music, that’s it. In one particular song, “20 Somethings” she really got me. It hit home and made really appreciate want kind of music SZA is making, “How could it be, 20 something, all alone still, not a thing in my name”.
More than anything, I genuinely feel like watching SZA perform will be good for your soul. Don’t miss this show which has already been upgraded to a bigger venue to suit her hugely growing fan base.
nzgirl has a chance for you win two tickets to her concert on the 9th of January 2018, tag a friend you would take and you are in the draw.
