READ, WATCH, LISTEN: Wonder Woman is Here + WIN Epic Threads!
The M rating of Wonder Woman, while I understand it due to the level of implied violence, is a pain in my butt because this movie should be a rite of passage for every girl aged 11 and above. Because Wonder Woman the movie more than mere #girlpower. And it’s more than having a strong female lead fighting a “man’s” war (its star Gal Gadot having gained 7.7kgs of muscle to play the role following months of martial arts training).
No, this movie begins with scene after scene of powerful woman in hand to hand combat, exhibiting great wisdom, with the main theme of the movie that one person can change the world and love is our strongest superpower.
Oh, and that “one person” happens to be a kickass woman who is prepared to risk everything to make a difference.
Have you ever seen such a thing in your lifetime? I haven’t.
Wonder Woman, Diana, is played by former model and actress Gal Gadot. I fell in love with this star in the terrible, terrible (do not see this movie!!) 2016 Keeping Up With The Joneses and stalked her after that. I was then thrilled to see she was cast in the lead role (and yep, I missed Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ‘cos it sounded like shit!). But nothing prepared me for how utterly exquisite Gal would be.
She is breathtaking.
Talented, intelligent in the role of naive Diana, Gal is a powerhouse on screen, and I cannot think of a single star that could have replaced her (even though Élodie Yung and Olga Kurylenko auditioned for the role). I am not giving you plot stuff here… personally, I love not knowing.
And yeah, there’s the entirely unsurprising love story between Diana and US Army Air Force pilot, Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine (with it’s plot-changing twist) the cheesy lad gang of misfits, the cutesy, oh-so-English role of Etta, hilariously played by scene-stealer Lucy Davis, and some “well, that’s convenient” moments. But this is DC and that’s the suspended reality that we enter into when a movie has its origins in a comic.
Wonder Woman premiered in Shanghai, China on 15 May this year and since its arrival its garnered universal critical acclaim – most particularly for Gal, who easily outshines everyone else on screen. It opens today nationwide in New Zealand and 100% Yes!, you should see this movie!
