Do you remember the mean girl from high school? You know the one, she takes every opportunity to lower your self-esteem and she doesn’t even pretend she’s not enjoying it?

Classic teen movies are full of these iconic characters; from Regina George in Mean Girls, to Easy A and The Princess Diaries.

Now, New Zealand has a mean girl to call our very own with J’ess from awkward high school comedy Lucy Lewis Can’t Lose!

Meet Lucy Lewis. Her high school has officially gone weird. When an anonymous Instagrammer hits Hills High all hell breaks loose, and Lucy must battle mean girls, unfair rules and the super scary Principal.

This time, poor Lucy Lewis (Thomasin McKenzie) has to deal with the worst slash best mean girl ever, J’ess (Erana James, who is also starring in upcoming movie The Changeover!).

J’ess throws shade, rocks the eighties Goth queen look and is the new standard in which to measure a girl’s meanness. Here are some mean-girl spotting tips Lucy could have done with!

1. Mean girls always have a strong look.

Note the eyeliner, the bold berry lips and the perfect resting b***ch face? It’s important to remember, mean girls only every smile on the inside.

2. Her name is as distinctive as her make-up choices.

3. Her deadpan sarcasm knows no bounds.

4. She knows gives a backhanded compliment like a flippin’ pro.

5. And finally, mean girls call it as they see it.
