hot-fiveI met documentary maker of Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead Joe Cross (pictured right) last year and was profoundly affected by his story. He transformed himself from being morbidly obese – where he had also developed the autoimmune disease, chronic urticaria – through to full health achieved simply through drinking juice for 60 days straight.

Joe’s story was beyond compelling. At aged just 40, weighing in at a staggering 140.6kg, Joe’s life was hanging on by a thread. He relied on steroids and a medicine cabinet full of drugs just to stay alive. So he took the drastic decision to heal himself by hitting the road with his juicer and driving 4,830km chronicling his travels. Spoiler alert: by documentary’s end, having consumed only juice for 60 days, Joe had restored himself to wellness as well had lost a whopping 37kgs. Today Joe maintains his juice lifestyle by juicing throughout the day and only eating (healthy) meals for dinner. He’s not only maintained his excellent, drug-free wellness, but he’s become the global advocate for health achieved by drinking juice.

rsz_pomSo what can we learn from Joe’s story? I reckon his journey is all the proof we need to know that juice is hugely beneficial to include in our everyday diet. For me, I was all swept up with Joe Cross juice fever and I got myself a juicer. But… and it’s a big but… I rarely use it. In theory, it’s a great idea. In reality however, it means me buying carloads of fruit and vegetables and using (and cleaning!!!) my juice machine. For me, it’s just not cost or time effective.

Like I say, a great idea in theory.

But there are fab alternatives to buying your weight in fruit and vegetables. And when V8 introduced me to its V8 Fusion range I was amped to give them a try. You know V8… it’s the brand famous for veggie juice. I’ll introduce you to its fruit and veggie range below, but first… what are the benefits of your consuming a glass of fruit and veggie juice a day?

pearsNot all of us find it easy to down glasses and glasses of water per day, or have access to natural whole foods loaded with water to munch on during the day. In fact, studies have revealed that as many as 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated, and the same could be true of us Kiwis (Source). And while we might actually be drinking a lot of water each day, beverages like alcohol may be dehydrating us, causing the need to drink even more water. Being consistently dehydrated causes constant fatigue, and has been linked with impaired concentration, reduced short term memory ability, anxiety, and kidney stones. So an easy solution is to rehydrate quickly with juice. It’s perfect first thing in the morning when we can feel the most dehydrated.

Mangoes-And-OrangesWhen we’re low on energy it’s easy to reach for an energy drink (or chocolate), but caffeine and sugar do the opposite of giving your body energy. In fact, long term, consuming high levels of caffeine and sugar can deplete your body’s adrenal glands, lowering cortisol levels, and put you on the short path to very debilitating adrenal fatigue (Source). Fruit juice is the easiest, quickest and healthiest way of giving your body a shot of natural energy during the day and is perfect for that 2pm slump. Drinking juice has no nasty side effects and is definitely way better than downing another coffee!

apples-carrots-300x193Global health advocate Dr Mercola says drinking juice is an efficient way to up your consumption of fruit and vegetables on a daily basis (Source). Sometimes it’s not always possible to give our bodies the vitamins and minerals they need on a daily basis by eating loads of fruit and vegetables – we’re busy gals – and it’s easy to skip a wholesome meal. But starting the day with a glass of juice guarantees you’ve put some goodness into your bod and are ready to roll. So if you’re hitting the gym early, getting in from a run, travelling, late for uni, are inclined to having a late lunch and need a little something at mid-morning, or going out straight after work with no time for dins, having a glass of juice is a whole lot easier and more efficient than eating carrots and apples on the go. And it’s perfect for helping you to get that 5+ a day, which in our very full lives sometimes just isn’t realistic.

pineAfter years of (probably) feeding our bodies some less than ideal foods – hey, we’re only human – our bodies can suffer from impaired digestive ability, which means we’re not optimally extracting all the nutrients from the foods we’re eating. This is especially so in a typical Western diet, evidenced by increasing chronic dietary diseases such as coeliac disease, irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn’s disease (Source). Upping our intake of fruit and vegetable juice can provide a nutrient boost that aids in keeping our bodies healthy, including our gut. (Source).

So, now let’s meet the fab V8 Fusion fruit and veggie juices.
