NAME: Whata Wanakore AGE: 19 EMPLOYER/COMPANY: I AM TV, TVNZ POSITION: Presenter/reporter
Can you give us a brief job description? I’m one of three presenters on I AM TV. Our job is to interview a different range of people and groups, including awesome rangatahi (youth) from around Aotearoa, to present and inform our watchers about all the latest things coming out and all the mean, up and coming events happening in Aotearoa and around the world. Fun yaaaaaa! How did you get this job? Well I heard that I AM TV was looking for a new presenter, so I sent in my CV and showreel on Bebo, and before I knew it I was working on the best show in Aotearoa. Cheeeer. What inspired you to get into this field? Ever since I was a little kid, I suppose I enjoyed watching TV and always wished to be a presenter. I remember watching a music award show and watching the person presenting, and I thought I could do that… So here I am. What is a typical week at work like for you? Fun azzzzzzzzzzz. We never know what we are up to every week; it’s a surprise and that’s cool. One week I’m doing a bungy jump off the Habour bridge, and then the next week I’m interviewing someone famous - it’s awesome. What do you enjoy about your job most of all? You mean what do I not enjoy about my job?!!! It’s mean fun! I cant complain. Best perks of the job? Clothes hehe… And my iPod Touch. What things do you think make your job different or fun? Doing something different every day makes it fun What personality traits/skills/attributes help a person get a job like yours? Firstly, just be yourself. People can tell if you’re being fake. You must be confident, a real people’s person (because you are talking to a wide variety of people from different walks of life), you have to be open to trying new things and up for anything, and want to have fun! Most memorable moment of your job so far? I have to say the bungy was crazy scary; the instructor was pressuring me and rushing me, but honestly once you jump it’s just sooooooooo mean. I’m keen to do it again! Any advice for nzgirls wanting to get into this field? Honestly just be yourself; you have to want to do it! Get experience, be willing to give things a try, practise, practise and practise! Practise by interviewing your mates, family etc, and stand in front of a camera and chat away so that you can see how you are on TV, go and study at a film and television school, you know how it is - just go hard and you should go well! Where would you like to go from here? While I’ve been with this awesome crew and spending time with the directors, I would like to get in to directing (on I AM TV). I reckon it will be cool as to be able to help create a cool show, and wouldn’t mind getting into a bit of acting as well.
