You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on furnishing your home with high-end products to make it the envy of all your friends and neighbours. You have to do some thoughtful shopping though. It’ll take some time to fill the home with great items that will have everyone talking, but in the end, it’ll be worth the time.

1. TradeMe, Neighbourly or Carousell Your Way to a Great Home

These site are a cheap way to get pre-loved items that are still stunning. You’ll have to be strategic and have a car or van to move the items once you find them. If you’re not sure what items you’ll need, simply cruise the listings in your city. You can also expand your search to the surrounding cities and suburbs too.

The free section will occasionally have items, but that can be hit or miss. Instead, search the richest city near your location. They’ll likely have expensive items for sale for a fraction of the price you’ll see in the stores.

2. Thrift and Paint: Your Friends Will Never Know

While finding reusable items, remember that you can up-cycle any of those items into unique pieces that nobody else will have. All it takes is a bit of creative imagination and some spray paint to create a one-of-a-kind piece that you can’t find elsewhere. It’ll save you money when you shop at thrift stores over more expensive chain stores too.

You don’t have to limit your search to online ads. Search your local op shops for unique items that you can clean up for your home. Ask friends or family if they have furniture or other items in their garage or basements. Usually parents have items they don’t use anymore, and you can give these items a new look for your home quite easily.

3. Discount Appliances: Protect the Home

Before purchasing brand-new appliances, consider whether you can purchase the same appliance for a bit less at a discount appliance store. A used washer and dryer, refrigerator, dishwasher or air conditioning unit can be a huge savings over a new one. Often, they’ve been services already too.

When purchasing used appliances as well as new appliances, it’s important to have a home warranty that will cover work that needs to be done. In the long run, it’ll save you money while keeping the appliances in good condition for years.

4. Keep it Clean and Welcoming

The hardest part of creating a home that will be the talk of the town is keeping it clean on a daily basis. Unless you’re home all the time or have a cleaning crew on standby, it can be tough to keep the place sparkling for company.

The best way to keep the house clean is to create an organised space. For example, have a pretty bowl near the front door for keys and mail, which can normally get dumped on the kitchen counters.

5. Discount Art Pieces

If you have friends or family that create stunning works of art, you can likely get one of their pieces for a discounted price. It’s a great way to fill your home with original artwork that has a special meaning for you as well as the person you supported.

You can also buy art at op shops. There have been famous pieces of lost art found at op shops and garage sales. At the very least, you’ll find a unique piece of art that will brighten up the home.

There’s no reason to spend full price for items that will make your home unique. The most unique pieces are going to be ones that you create yourself from found items at thrift store or online classifieds.
