How to Farewell a Friend

Saying goodbye to a friend is never easy, but there comes a point in your life where your mates are heading away left right and centre!

Although it’s hard to say goodbye to some one you care about, we have a few tips to help make fare welling that special buddy a little easier…

Say cheese!
Whether you think you’re photogenic or not, photos of you and your friends are special and should be celebrated, especially when one of them is moving away! Try giving her a little mini photo album with all of your favourite photos. Then she can show off her gorgeous friends from back home, to her new foreign acquaintances! A little photo frame with the two of you in it would be perfect to spice up her new room as well. Just keep it small so it doesn’t take up too much precious suitcase space!

It’s all about the memories

Create a list of all your favourite personal jokes and memories in a little book or a piece of poster paper – one for her and one for you. That way you can both remember all the good times, no matter how far apart you are. Things like concert tickets, photos and stories are great to include.

Friends forever
As cheesy as they may seem, “friendship books” are a great way to get all of her friends involved in her farewell. Available at most stationary shops, friendship books have questions that each member of the group fills out about themselves. Imagine a whole book jam packed with bits and pieces about your favourite people! Perfect plane reading material!

Let’s party!
No farewell is complete without a farewell party. Although it is important to make the party unique to the person leaving – make sure that she can really appreciate and enjoy her goodbye bash. For example, if your friend is a social butterfly and loves any excuse for a dance party then find a venue and organise a great play list and she’ll love you forever. However, if she’s more of a quiet type then a low-key dinner with her closest friends and family might be the way to go.

I’m a survivor
Every girl needs a survival kit, especially if they are off exploring new and dangerous places. Anything could happen to a girl on the move! Show her that you care by putting her together a little survival kit, with everything that she will need. Think a pen knife, mini mascara, notepad and pen, moisturiser, lip balm, plasters, throat lozenges and anything else that she is bound to find useful.

Make them feel special
A friend leaving is definitely one thing that calls for the allowance of emotions! Don’t be afraid to make a big fuss and continuously remind her of how much you are going to miss her. She’s off to start a new stage of her life, so it’s never going to be a bad thing to know that she’s got lots of loving and supportive people back home. Besides, everyone likes a little bit of attention every now and then! Now is the time to let her shine.

Last but definitely not least, always remember that it’s “I’ll see you later” not “goodbye”. We all start new and exciting stages of our life, but great friendships don’t end because of this. In today’s world your friends are always only an email away! And just think of all the great stories you will be able to share when you finally catch up again.
