Going It Alone – The Single Women’s Guide to Pregnancy and Birth

Going It Alone – The Single Women’s Guide to Pregnancy and Birth
Natascha Mirosch & Geraldine Johns
New Holland Publishers – RRP $24.95

Natascha Mirosch and Geraldine Johns are both single mothers. Natascha, who is based in Australia, decided to write this book after finding there was no relevant information about the issues specific to single mothers-to-be. Geraldine Johns is a print journalist who lives in Auckland with her son. Geraldine ‘New Zealandised’ Going It Alone, as this book has been released in both Australia and New Zealand.

Going It Alone contains up-to-date information on the latest procedures and facilities available to pregnant women. The book also includes guidelines and advice on the best form of exercise and eating while pregnant. It follows the development of your baby, what you baby should be doing, how big you baby may be etc. Labour and childbirth options and issues are detailed, up to date and relevant for the New Zealand single mother. Illustrations feature right throughout the book, plus tables, pie graphs etc. But quite possibly the most enjoyable reading is the intimate interviews with an array of single mothers who have experienced pregnancy without a partner’s support. The interviews were easy for me to relate to, and many other single mothers will relate easily to the single mother-to-be’s experiences as well.

Going It Alone details:

· What to expect through every stage of pregnancy
· What to eat and the best forms of exercise
· The development of your baby
· Issues that may arise with the baby’s father
· How to deal with your employer
· Helpful financial advice for the single mother
· Choosing a sympathetic doctor or midwife
· Buying good for your baby and saving money
· Labour and childbirth options in New Zealand
· What to do after the birth

I would highly recommend this book to any mother ‘Going It Alone’. The information is extremely helpful for any single mother-to-be. The book is well priced at RRP $24.95 (I could not find anything under $40 when I was pregnant, and there was not a specialised book for single mothers-to-be either!). Going It Alone caters exceptionally to the needs for the single mother-to-be and the baby-to-be.
