Help With Picking a Career…

From a young age we are expected to know what we are going to do with our lives. This is all fine and dandy, except most people don’t know which path is right for them until they are grown up.

Sure, there are the select few who knew their calling before they could walk. But if you are among the majority who weren’t creating abstract works of art between bottle feeds and diaper changes, don’t stress – you are normal!

So how does one decide between a career as a brainy business woman or a feisty fashionista? There are three golden rules when it comes to discovering your professional destiny. Pay close attention grasshopper, for these steps could change the course of your life forever….

1: Know yourself
Sounds simple right? We’re not talking about rounding off your top ten favourite designers in alphabetical order here.

In order to make the right career decisions for you, you need to identify your skills, weaknesses and values. Then you can start thinking about jobs that are suitable for you long term.

2: Research your ideas
Get as much information as possible, and don’t make assumptions. If you’re interested in a job because of the salary, make sure you’ve got your facts straight before going any further.

You might find the job of your dreams requires you to have a specific qualification. Ask yourself, is furthering your education is going to serve you better in the long run? If so, start finding out about the study options available to you.

3: Get it started
Now that you know the ins’ and outs’ of the careers you’re interested in, you can start zoning in on the one you want to pursue. If you’re having a hard time deciding, try writing a list of pros and cons. Give yourself time – this process can’t be rushed!

Sign up with recruitment agencies, approach employers, or enrol in that life-changing course – do what you have to do to get the ball rolling.

Keep in mind that this will be an ever evolving process, and it’s ok for your plans to change along the way.

If you find out need a diploma for the job of your dreams, consider it. If someone gives you feedback, embrace it. If something gets in your way of achieving success, knock ‘em down and go even harder, because although it might not happen overnight…it will happen.
