Dreamer, have you tried cutting out milk? Milk is one of the really bad ones for acne, along with orange juice and citrus juices. Might be a good one to look into. Also, supplementing zinc is meant to be really good too. :)

Definitely go to the naturopath rather than doctor – so often acne is a reaction to a food source, or hormonal, and all the doctors do is treat the symptom not the cause. Find the cause and treat that and you’ll have the solution.

Oh, while I’m at it, this is a really good article about it, might give you some places to start at too. :)

Yes I like that site! Ha yes, I’ve tried cutting out dairy and I don’t have much citrus at the moment either. (I used to but my skin was nicer then!)

You know what though…. I have stopped using my mineral foundation over the last 4 days, and my skin is just looking better and better. (I have been using a touch of my old concealer… so scary going to work without most of my makeup though). I realised my downward spiral started when I started using mineral foundation. (then even more so after OCM). I did some research, and and perhaps I am reacting to the buffing, or the Mica? or perhaps the iron oxides?? I really don’t know. I was using everyday minerals which didn’t have bismuth oxychloride… so I thought I was being kind to my skin by using it.

My skins redness / aggravated look has pretty much gone. I had plenty of small red bumps along my temples which are not there anymore. My skin isn’t sensitive in those areas anymore either – it was quite sore with the bumps. I still have some hormonal pimples near my chin, and a couple of pimples on my forehead, but my skins looking much better. I will stay away from mineral foundation for the new few weeks and see what happens.

I may try a zinc supplement in the future but I am just seeing how my skin goes while i’m not using the mineral foundation. This has been such a weird experience. Ahh such a long post sorry.

(P.S- Mewfreak… have you seen the “Food Matters” documentary? I think you would know most of the info they have in it, but it’s still a great watch!)

No problem!

I’ve been finding the same thing with my foundation (Everyday Minerals), but I don’t actually know if it’s that or something else. I suspect it’s not helping, but then nothing I’ve ever used has been good for my skin so I only ever use it maybe two or three times a week… except my mascara, can’t go out without it haha sad!

And what is this documentary you speak of? :P

Here is the trailer – basically about healing yourself with food and nutrition.. that kind of thing. Talks also about the benefits of raw foods, and healing with vitamin therapy (not sure of the proper name)

Food Matters website

I paid to stream it online… I quite enjoyed it. I never realised that “alternative” treatments to cancer were fricken illegal, how wrong is that!

Haha, yeah. A herbalist I know through another natural health site was threatened by the US FDA not long ago with arrest because he sells herbs online that can beat cancer pretty easily; they’re very potent. He said they’re used to treat cancer – nothing about a cure – and was told to remove them and the mention of cancer because it’s ‘illegal’ and ‘false’ (never mind that chemo only gives a 3% higher success rate than doing nothing at all!), or face fines and imprisonment. It’s such a joke.

Herbs beat cancer?
I’m all about natural… but I find that a stretch…

Sure do! Well, more accurately, the body does the healing, the herbs just give it the support needed to do so. There are plenty out there that can heal cancer when used properly, but that’s not to say just go to a health food shop and buy a bunch, you need to know what you’re doing obviously!

Ooh I’m subversive saying this, better not let the FDA see… ;)

Problem is… the body doesn’t know its wrong.
Obviously you know what cancer is, so I won’t lecture… but how does the body heal something that thinks its doing the right thing?
This is interest.. not incitement

Hehe, that’s ok!! Interesting way of looking at it. A lot of it comes down to toxins and cellular damage (which I’m sure you’ve got a fair idea about being in le skincare business!), and the body’s natural defence systems being broken down and unable to kill the ‘rogue cells’ itself. Find the reason things are going wrong and the cells are multiplying into cancer, and you find the cure.

Which all sounds very vague and air-fairy but I’m at work so can’t go into too much detail (writing this a sentence at a time while nobody’s looking, hehe). I’ll go into a bit better detail later tonight and get some decent (scientific) resources for you – promise you it’s not the least bit strange or hippie-trippie or anything and it doesn’t involve lighting incense and smoking weeds whilst chanting Tibetan hymns!! ;)

Hahahahahahhaa you’ve got me started now. :P

Right, there is a thread just for you in the health and fitness one so we don’t hijack the acne talk too much. I’m still finding stuff (the Oxford Journal of Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine is a great resource by the way) but hit post so I didn’t lose what I’d written and throw the computer out the window.

I found this article through Google. I hope you find it helpful:

5 Natural Remedies For Getting Rid of Acne

If you have ever suffered from acne, you know how painful it can be! If the pain is not bad enough, you also get ugly scars! Acne can happen both to teenagers as well as adults! For some people, the acne eventually goes but the scar remains for a long time; for others, acne vulgaris is a regular affair! In this article I will tell you about some of the natural remedies you can use to treat acne!

Before I go on to elaborate on the natural remedies, I must tell you that if you are allergic to any of these substances, you must stop its use immediately! Also, if these natural remedies do not help you, you may eventually have to go for more expensive alternatives such as dermabrasion and laser treatment! For most people, however, these remedies usually work wonders!

One more thing: regular washing of your face with clean water is a habit you must inculcate, if you have not already! Also, if you apply make-up or cosmetics, it is important that you remove the make-up/cosmetic once its job is over, instead of letting it remain on the skin. A lot of cosmetics contain powerful chemicals that would harm your skin in more ways that you could imagine!

Okay, I have rambled enough now, so here are some of the recommended natural treatments for acne:

Lemon Juice: The lemon is one versatile remedy provided by nature – you can cure so many ailments with it – even acne vulgaris! The lemon juice contains natural bleaching agents that would help you get rid of the redness caused by acne. The lemon juice also helps in removing the acne scar tissue so that new, healthier tissue can emerge in its place.

The treatment is simple: get a clean cotton swab or pad, and use that to apply lemon juice on to the affected area! Leave it like that for some time, and then wash the area with clean water!

Apple Cider Vinegar: Before using any kind of acne treatment, it is important to note that our skin has the tendency to renew and rejuvenate itself naturally, over time. Apple Cider Vinegar detoxifies your body by cleansing it of all the toxins that are causing acne; on top of that, it also speeds up our skin’s rejuvenation process. You can take either it as an oral medicine if you want, or apply it on the affected area of the skin!

Oatmeal: Along with lemon, this is one of the most commonly used natural remedies for acne! Mix oatmeal powder with rose water and apply it on the affected area, then leave it on the skin for at least 10-15 minutes, after which you should wash the face with cold water. Do this every day and you would notice that not just your pimples but even those ugly acne scars have vanished!

Egg whites: Not many people know that you can use egg whites in order to treat acne! Create a facemask out of egg whites and leave it on your face for an entire night; it is preferable to wear this ‘mask’ at bedtime for obvious reasons!

The Tomato-Cucumber Combo: These oft-eaten vegetables are also great in treating acne. Extract the liquid juice from both these vegetables and then mix them; then wash your face thoroughly, and apply the juice on to the affected area! The antioxidant properties of tomato would help prevent further damage of your skin. These two vegetables also help in making the skin smoother, tighter and stronger!
