Taking a different turn this year, Auckland City Limits is set to bring in a new mature audience with a nostalgic line up that offers disco queen, Grace Jones, indie prince Beck and long-running electronic act JUSTICE.
People may be surprised by this considering last year brought Kendrick Lamar and The National. Don’t be fooled though, the line up is also full of new and upcoming acts including The Beths, Sigrid, SWIDT and Jon Lemmon.
The second ACL is a whole new direction and so I am offering to break down some of my musts sees’ on the day. This festival is just in its early beginnings and it’s only getting better.
The easiest place to begin is Grace Jones. I was talking to someone just the other day about her being on the lineup and it’s somewhat surealness.
Seeing Grace Jones is like seeing a real-life unicorn. All this time, I wasn’t sure she even existed because she is just so much of a legend. But she is coming with her new wave, disco, reggae brand of music. If her music isn’t your thing then simply see her for her sheer beauty.
At 1.75 meters tall and a successful modeling career, her stage show will flaw you.
The D4 was a huge part of rock girl youth and the fact that they are on the lineup and now touring the north island makes me feel more nostalgic than anything else. The New Zealand group parted ways in the mid 2000s’ after a somewhat successful career.
It has been 10 years since they were together and it’s going to be the definition of kick-ass. Their genre is what I would call garage rock but their live performances are what I would call rock ‘n’ rock as hell.
Sigrid is a relatively new Norwegian pop star but for some reason, I can’t get enough of her fresh-faced bold pop music.
I do hand on heart believe that northern European countries make the best pop music (Robyn, Susan Sundfor, ABBA & Aqua are all from north Europe).
I was shocked when I realised I had never seen Aaradhna before. Hailing from Wellington, Aaradhna has had a long music career including her most recent album which won her a Tui at last year’s NZMAs’ for best performer in the Urban category which she declared, she is not and asked where the soul category was!
I know she is most likely going to play her new stuff which I love but what I would give to hear a throwback to her earlier stuff, like the below song which came out seven years ago.
You simply can not go past J.U.S.T.I.C.E who is another headlining act that is performing. They are an electronic French duo who are nothing like Daft Punk, bringing strong rock and indie influences to their music.
They will get you dancing that is for sure. Another throwback tune that everyone will know, D.A.N.C.E.
And we have tickets to give away!
