Shaun Tan’s wonderful world of the ‘The Arrival’, will be brought to life again this July here in Auckland. Since sweeping the 2010 Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards Red Leap Theatre have captivated audiences of all ages from here to Korea and many a spot in between performing one of New Zealand theatre’s most stunning and innovative works.
The show, aptly named ‘The Arrival’ is a enchanting adaptation of Tan’s award winning graphic novel and just as the book, features no English language. The narrative is instead driven by a highly physical and talented cast of ten actors including original creator Kate Parker, Jarod Rawiri (Matariki, Brothers Size), Alison Bruce (The Almighty Johnsons, Calendar Girls), Sally Stockwell (After the Waterfall, Outrageous Fortune) and Jared Turner (The Almighty Johnsons, Go Girls) to name only a few.
A tribute to migrants, refugees and displaced people worldwide. It is ultimately a story of overcoming hardship, of humanity and of hope – amalgamating what some would cite as “conventional” theatre with puppetry, music, movement and shadow play; all of which has sent hearts and imaginations to a land of flying ships, strange birds and travelling balloons.
Having read the hard cover multiple times, I’m incredibly excited to see Tan’s world full size. My tickets booked! And with the wee season of just 3 shows, I suggest you start warming a seat for yourself too.
But don’t just listen to me -
“… a highlight of the Festival… a visual feast… a mesmerizing, enthralling production
rapturously received that speaks both of the past yet to the present. Don’t miss it.”
- Glen Coleman, The Daily Telegraph (Sydney)
