Lana Del Rey is a name you may have heard bandied about. On the one hand she’s been heralded as the new sensation and then on the other she’s been slammed as overhyped and manufactured – all before her debut album was even released.
Lana Del Rey is, not surprisingly, a stage name. Lana went by Lizzy Grant for an album prior to Born To Die. When things didn’t take off she underwent a transformation – changing her name, the size of her lips and her marketing budget care of her father.
To cut a long, arduous and argumentative story short, Lana Del Rey is a singer who has used everything at her disposal to get what she wanted in life. Who is going to blame a girl for that?!
So looking past the stage name, the lips, and Dad’s money we have a raw and different album.
Lana describes herself as a ‘self-styled, gangsta Nancy Sinatra’ and I wouldn’t disagree. Her voice is sweet, raw and mellow, yet the songs and videos have a corrupt and confused dark side. It creates a great juxtaposition. You have a beautiful, seemingly gentle singer, writing songs about death, leather, tattoos, destruction and loss.
Del Rey’s first single Video Games is about love, and what you would do to keep it. She is a girl who knows better, but will still do anything for the love of a bad boy. It’s this song that got her noticed. With its catchy hook and her haunting voice, the song definitely stands out. My other picks are National Anthem and Blue Jeans.
Born To Die is an album for Lana Del Rey fans. I know that sounds obvious, but I think you either dig her vibe or you just don’t get it at all.
So if you like Video Games, you’ll enjoy Born To Die. The album is perfect for summer, and you’ll find yourself pouting as you sing along in no time. Seriously, you’ll do it unconsciously!!
