Our favourite: Annabel Fay’s Favourite Things

It’s been a few years since we’ve heard from songstress Annabel Fay, but she’s back with new single, ‘The River’ as a taster of what’s to come on her second album due out early next year. We sat down to talk about the new song, shooting the video clip in Cuba and some of her favourite things.

What didn’t make it onto the clip, but is one of my favourite insights is that the meaning behind ‘The River’ is slightly different than what you might have expected; ”[It's] about loving someone enough to let them go, knowing they will eventually come back to you . Growing up there were people who disconnected with me, knowing – or perhaps just hoping – that I would sort my shit out. I may have turned the message on its head, but it still rings true.”

Annabel Fay’s Favourite Things

  • EAT: My favourite thing to do is go out for breakfast. I’ve got all my cafes over the city for different things. I get my porridge from Dizengoff, my pancakes from Meola Kitchen, my scrambled eggs from Monterey, then my chilli scrambled eggs from Five Loaves, my pikelets from Shaky Isles and if you want an omelette, go across the road to The Fridge.
  • BUY: I’m not much of a shopper, strangely enough the things I spend the most money on are things to cook with. I love going to Zarbo, Sabato and Nosh and buying stupidly expensive oils and kitchen gear. I like to try and pretend I’m on Masterchef.
  • ENTERTAIN: Favourite TV show right now, #1 is Cougar Town - I want Courtney Cox to be my best friend – and another show called Sons of Anarchy. And Superette magazine with really hot models in it.
  • PEOPLE: At the moment I quite like my sister, she’s lived overseas for a long time and she’s back and my favourite famous person right now is Nikka Costa, she’s one of those singers who’s teetered around the fame world, everyone knows her songs but no one knows it her. Everyone knows her music but you’re not going to get snapped for NW!
  • PLACES: In New Zealand I’m obsessed with Queenstown. In Auckland one of my favourite things to do is Icing on the Cake to get fro-yo then sit down in Central Bay and eat my fro-yo. Internationally, I spent a lot of time in New York, I’ve got a lot of family there. When I lived in Switzerland we did a school trip and canoed down a river in Provence, but it was just that area and I love the history and the architecture.
  • KNOW: One thing I live by a lot is you get what you give, I’m a firm believe in karma and energy. If you put something positive out, you get something positive back.
