A friend tipped me off to pop in to visit a new tart in Auckland (where the owners son told him ‘The rocky roads not as good today because I didn’t make it’), she’s been open only 25 days and I’m so glad I did!

Tart Bakery is a little gem in the heart of Grey Lynn shops. Family owned and operated, Tart is bringing back the kiwi bakery your parents used to visit on their way home from school and it seems it hasn’t taken long for this generation of kids to cotton on too, I visited just after school was out and their cream buns were rolling out the door!

Complete with cute bunting (made locally by Hunting Letter Flags), staff ready to chat like they’re your neighbour and cabinets packed with Edmonds Cookbook treats and bread that doesn’t look like every other loaf at every other spot in town, this place feels just right. All baked on site, you can even have a nosey peek into the kitchen behind the counter, $2.70! muffins (I woofed mine down before I even got back to the car) and blooming good coffees to go, I’ve already been back for another visit this week!

The owner told me she’s doing it for the ladies, particularly the 45+ bracket, saying she wants to show people that it’s never too late to launch your own career, to discover yourself again after raising your children and it doesn’t have to cost your life savings either. Doing most of the fit out herself and buying all the tools of the trade at auction. After I left I realised we’d chatted so easily I hadn’t even caught her name, but not a worry! I’ll be back, most probably tomorrow, for a perfectly presented sammy and perhaps a Otago apricot slice for dessert.
