The cold winter air can be very damaging to our skin, so it’s important to look after i
t. Here are five simple tips to look after yourself this winter and keep your skin healthy and glowing.
Good hygiene is important to remove impurities and prevent bacterial growth. Use a mild cleanser and warm water to gently soothe the skin and bring it back into balance. For an extra treat, place a few drops of essential oils in the basin when you wash your face (lemon is invigorating in the morning and lavender is calming for nighttime). Cleanse twice a day with a gentle pH neutral cleanser, then rinse and pat your skin dry.
When you gently exfoliate the surface layers of the skin, you remove dry dead skin cells which can lead to clogged pores. In winter, dead skin cells can build up and if you don’t remove them, it leads to dry dull looking skin. Using the right scrub will remove the dead skin cells and reveal younger glowing skin underneath. Look for one with Salicylic Acid (derived from plants) which encourages the shedding of dead skin cells, and minimizes whiteheads and blackheads. We like Bioré Pore Unclogging Scrub which is mild enough to use every day.
Switch to a slightly creamier moisturizer in the colder months. Apply every morning after cleansing to protect your skin from drying out and flaking.
4. Wear Sunscreen
Particularly important in summer but still necessary in the colder months too, sun protection is essential to maintain healthy glowing skin. Keep the sun factor light (SPF 15 is fine) and make sure it’s oil free and safe for use on the face.
5. Eat a balanced diet
Eating a balanced diet is one of the best ways to ensure you have healthy glowing skin all year round. Include lots of fresh (or frozen) fruit and vegetables, lean protein and grains. Keep sugar to a minimum and drink plenty of water to flush out toxins. We’d recommend taking a multivitamin to supplement (not replace) your balanced diet.
