Top 5 tips to look after your lips

Looking after your skin is vital in winter but many of us neglect our lips. Just like the rest of our skin, our lips need care too. In fact, the skin on the lips is thinner than the rest of our skin and doesn’t contain as much melanin (making it more prone to dryness and sunburn).

Look after your lips this winter with our top 5 tips and you’ll be blessed with the perfect pout!

1. Exfoliate
Just like the rest of our skin, our lips need exfoliating. This removes dead skin cells and reveals healthy young skin underneath. Once a week use a toothbrush to gently brush away the dead skin from your lips.

2. Moisturise
When the delicate skin on your lips lose moisture, the skin cracks causing chapped lips. You need to add moisture to nourish and protect the new skin cells that we’ve exposed by exfoliating.

3. Never Lick your Lips
It may be an expression of culinary gratitude but licking your lips will cause significant damage. As the saliva dries on your lips, it evaporates and takes with it more moisture from your lips, drying them out even further. Also, the enzymes in saliva actually eat away at the lips, leaving the skin even thinner and more prone to cracking.

4. Drink Water
Water is like moisturiser that we drink. Staying hydrated prevents your lips from getting dry and cracked. The risk of dehydration increases in winter because the air we breathe is drier. Try drinking warm water to help reach your 2L a day quota.

5. Repair
If all else fails, repair the damage. We love the new Blistex Intensive Repair. It’s perfect for combating winter’s wind, cold and sunshine as it treats lips that are suffering from chaffing, chapping and moisture loss.

You can find Blistex Intensive Repair at leading supermarkets, pharmacies and department stores nationwide for $6.95. Go here for more information on Blistex.
