Hot Five: 11 May 2012

Today’s Hot Five has been compiled by our favourite electro-pop starlet, Zowie. Zowie (aka Auckland’s Zoe Fleury) is the second of four very special guest editors we have on board for NZ Music Month!

It’s also perfect timing to celebrate the release of her debut album Love Demolition featuring tracks Broken Machine and her latest single My Calculator. Check out the new video for My Calculator here!

Described by one music critic as “a tiny dynamo of electrifying, positive energy” Zowie has distilled a bubbling mix of vintage synth-pop, shimmering electro, playground chants and rock ‘n’ roll swagger to create a moxy-fuelled sound all of her own.

Enjoy Zowie’s five favourite things in today’s Hot Five plus check out her new album this weekend!

LOVING _Senso Creepers

Bad-ass , classy and sparkly all in one. Senso sent me these shoes about a month ago and I can’t stop wearing them. They are super versatile and I get comments from everyone to punks and girly girls. I love wearing them with skinny black jeans but they also look great with skirts too. Now, there’s something you should know about me, my name is Zowie and I have a shoe obsession. I love crazy shoes – so brace yourself, this is not the last of funky footwear in today’s Hot Five!

LISTENING ON REPEAT_ Santigold Big Mouth

I really dig Santigold. She’s a great songwriter with attitude – with M.I.A esq to her. I like this track as it’s rhythmically exciting and she’s telling someone to shut their big mouth!!! If you don’t know much about Santigold she’s an American singer/songwriter and has two records out. Her first came out in 2008 called ‘Santogold’ – she then changed her name to Santigold a bit after. If you dig Big Mouth off the new album – you might also like Creator off her first album too which was actually co-written by a kiwi (Freq Nasty). Have a listen to Big Mouth here!

ADDICTED TO WATCHING_Breaking Bad

This show is genius and seeing Bryan Cranston (Hal the crazy Dad from Malcolm in The Middle) playing a completely different character is really interesting. It’s in the same line of cleverness that Dexter has. Breaking Bad, (without giving too much away) is about Walter (Bryan Cranston) who is diagnosed with a life threatening illness – which drives him to ultimate extremes to make sure his family isn’t left with nothing when he passes away. He is a brilliant chemistry teacher and decides cooking drugs (Meth-amphetamines) is how he is going to do it. You’ll be constantly sitting on the edge of your chair!  Vince Gilligan (mastermind behind The X-Files) created and produces the show. It’s won six Emmy awards – simply watch it to see why!! Breaking Bad is currently on TV Four on Thursdays at 10.30pm (showing the third season).

CRAVING_ Rainbow Cake!!

I don’t remember exactly what encouraged me to look up rainbow cakes on Instagram but something did and WOW!! It looks like the tastiest looking cake. Ever. I’ve found myself really into obscure cakes or more just food in general over the past couple of years. This takes the cake (like what I did there). I think it’s about time to give it a go. If you dare to try it too – here’s a decent looking recipe. This isn’t your average layered rainbow cake by the way!! Check it out here!

LUSTING FOR_ Black Milk x Jeffrey Campbell shoe collection

Comic books, the galaxy and bones prints – love them!! As I mentioned above yes I love wacky shoes – I love Jeffrey Campbell as it is. I’ve worn Jeffrey Campbell shoes in two of my videos now, super glittery pink Litas and also Platform Creepers with Studs. This new collection is a collaboration with cool clothing brand Black Milk. I LOVE the three patterns they’ve used as I’m a huge comic book fan, I’m obsessed with space, plus I love horror and that bones print just screams “HORROR!” You have to check out the collection HERE! Go on! x
