There are many lessons to be had from eyebrow tweezing/plucking sessions and finding a professional is not always the answer.
I recently came out of a beauty salon looking like a plucked chicken when the beauty therapist waxed my straight, thin brows to within an inch of their life, in an attempt to create an arch!
It’s taken me a couple of months to grow them back and I’m now liking the natural look on me, as I only pluck a very few (and very stray hairs) to keep them tidy. It may sound stupid, but I would probably rather have a bad haircut than bad eyebrows. Once eyebrow hair is removed, there is no guarantee that it will grow back, which makes it’s a bit of a risky beauty ‘treatment’.
It must be said though, that a good eyebrow shape can frame the face, open the eye and give your face an ‘extreme makeover’ effect!
I recommend cutting out some pictures of eyebrows you like from magazines and taking them to a professional for your first time.
Now even though I just mentioned my own ‘professional’ horror story, I have friends who have perfect brows and swear that their beauty therapist is the best! So ask around, if you see someone with great brows, find out where they get them done.
If you are keen to take matters into your own hands, there are a few guidelines that you should follow.
Looking at the diagram, you can see that there is an eyebrow line that your shape should follow and you can ‘map’ the points on your face to guide you.
1. Your eyebrow should start at the same point as the inner corner of your eye.
2. The line straight from the corner of your nose and cutting through the centre of your pupil marks the guideline for the highest point of your arch.
3. Point 3 marks where the eyebrow should finish.
• Using the above points as a guide line, draw in your desired eyebrow shape with dark pencil and use this as a guide before you pluck.
• If you don’t have a dark pencil, covering up hairs you wish to remove with concealer, before you pluck them will give you an indication of what your new shape will look like.
• Always remember that it’s best to pluck only from below the eyebrows and not above, as this can alter the entire shape of the brow.
• Make sure that you only remove hair strand by strand and stand back from the mirror frequently to get a good look at the overall effect.
• Don’t do one eyebrow and move to the next, keep removing from both, in order to get the most even result.
