The nzgirl office had its first taste of New York rock chick Lucy Woodward when her debut single, “Dumb Girls” arrived with the day’s courier goodies. Listening to the album we could all recall a “dumb girl moment” – some more recently than others…
“While You Can” is an album that almost every girl can relate to. Made up of 11 tracks covering familiar moments like wondering why you’re alone (Trouble With Me) and deciding to give yourself a break and trust your instincts (What’s Good For Me)…it’s safe to say I had more than one “been there, done that” moment while listening to it!
Lucy’s voice has the familiar sound of rock chicks that have gone before her – Sheryl Crow, Pink, Gwen Stefani (No Doubt) – and like her peers Lucy’s lyrics are about the realities of love rather than the soppy side.
Lucy Woodward has mixed her soul, rock and pop influences with strong vocals to create a damn fine debut album. The songs are catchy with a rock-edge, which means those of you who like to sing along in the car (and I’m a serial offender) will have a damn good time belting out your I-don’t-quite-know-the-words-but-this-sounds-about-right version of each song.
Songs that get the repeat button on the CD player the most are “Dumb Girls” (of course) and “The Breakdown”, which includes the line;
“The Rolling Stones and I disagree
That you can’t always get what you need”
Go the Stones…and go Lucy…this album is good.
