Our favourite: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy – Kanye West

It’s no secret Kanye West crashed and burned last year.  Hard.

So his next album release has been highly anticipated.  Would he be able to pull himself back from the brink?  In short…yes!

The last time he was in the studio we were subjected to 808’s & Heartbreak, the birth – and what should have been the death – of auto-tune and a big black mark against Kanye; let’s face it – it wasn’t all roses with that one.  Never been known to keep his mouth shut on any issue, be it political or otherwise inclined, after ‘that’ incident with Taylor Swift most of us wondered: was it all really worth the arrogance?  Where had Kan-ye of olde gone?

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is well… exactly all those things, beautiful, dark, twisted and caught up in Kanye’s self fulfilling fantasy.  Whatever mud you sling at him Kanye is irrevocably one of the best hip hop producers – period.  This album is testament to that.

The hype around this whole album has been ridiculous.  Kanye is now the master of his own voice, Twitter has firmly cemented that to all of us and week by week we got a taste of what was to come.  There’s only been two official releases so far: Power accompanied by its epic masterpiece art video and Runaway accompanied by a 35min grandiose video not entirely centered on the track itself.  It’s an amalgamation of all the tracks from the album.  I wasn’t quite sure what to think about it to be honest, mainly I couldn’t get over how gorgeous Selita Ebanks as a phoenix is (what I would give to see her costume translated in to a wearable outfit).

To the album and its actual contents…lyrically he has delved deep in to the downfall that was and reflects, not shying away from being the first one to admit that he.f*cked.up.

There’s a few stand out tracks for me, Runaway has got that ‘I don’t give a f*ck’ vibe about it ‘Let’s have a toast to the douchebags, let’s have a toast for the assholes’ always gets a raise of our glasses.  If Kanye, the biggest douche of them all sometimes, can joke of his demise then I’m right there with him toasting to him and all the other idiots I have to deal with in my life – summer anthem right here.

Always one for a chunky beat I love Monster and while I despise Nicki Minaj   I think she is OK on this track – he proclaims here ‘Gossip, gossip nigga just stop it, everybody know I’m a motherf*cking monster….I crossed the line and I’ll let God decide’ and that he is.  It’s good to know that he knows what we all saw.  Devil in a New Dress – ultimate old school hip hop sample brought to life, this is the hip hop I love <3.

But my favourite track is Lost in this World which I find kind of ironic since it’s got only one verse in it but the energy is unflappable.  Count the appearances on vocals and production also, Rhianna, Jay-Z, Beyonce, RZA, John Legend, Raewkon, Bon Iver, Kid Cudi – I don’t know how he could have failed in all honesty.

I give it a 9/10, it really is as good as people say but its pretty hard in my eyes to pitch a faultless album.  I’ll still be listening to it in years to come and mostly for me it rings true Kanye; the good Kanye, not the douchebag of late.  It’s good to have you back mate.

*Highly recommend as a stocking filler for the boy/brother if they’re in to this kind of stuff
