Have you ever experienced small, little red lumps on the back of your arms, shoulders or thighs?
They aren’t painful and they aren’t pimples (although they may look similar), but they aren’t exactly what you want your skin to be covered in...
If you have, don’t stress! Those goosebump-like spots have a name - Keratosis Pilaris, otherwise known as ‘Chicken Skin’. It’s an unbelievably common skin ailment that an estimated 40–50% of the adult population suffers from! With that in mind, we decided it was high time to give Keratosis Pilaris a bit attention – here’s our complete guide to everything you need to know about and how to clear up the dreaded ‘Chicken Skin’! What is Keratosis Pilaris? It’s a very common but completely harmless skin condition commonly seen on the upper arms, buttocks and thighs. A number of rough bumps appear on skin, usually in large clusters and can look similar to goosebumps or pimples. They can have a dry 'sandpaper' feel, but don't usually itch or hurt.
What causes Keratosis Pilaris? Thank your mum and dad! It’s a hereditary condition – it’s not infectious. It occurs when your skin is unable to properly exfoliate itself. The bumps are essentially clogged pores. A protein called keratin builds up within the skin, resulting in the tiny bumps. It is also common amongst those who also suffer from eczema, and is most prevalent in adolescents. It also tends to get worse in winter – so now is the time to be clued up! How can I get rid of them? There is no dead set ‘cure’ but there are a range of treatment options you can try to help clear up the spots. Visit a doctor To be sure that you definitely do have Keratosis Pilaris (and not something else!) visit a doctor or dermatologist. You can’t treat something if you don’t have it! They will be able to advise you on a range of treatment options including topical creams. ExfoliationGentle exfoliation of the area can help to unclog the pores. You can use a loofah or puff, or use a super gentle product. Moisture A mild cleansing gel will help to remove dead skin cells, without drying out the skin. Keratosis Pilaris is a dry skin condition after all! After every shower or bath apply an intensive moisturising cream to help seal in the moisture. We love products that contain oatmeal – a natural soother.
Be gentle Take tepid, brief showers to help ensure that you don’t agitate your skin anymore. Home If the air inside your home is dry – use a humidifier. The extra moisture will help hydrate your dry skin, helping to clear the bumps. Ramarea
