Test Kitchen: Homemade Burgers!
|
|
|

Do you look at recipes in glossy magazines and cookbooks and despair of ever making anything like that yourself?
The nzgirl Test Kitchen is about real, easy food that anyone can make. We search out recipes, then test them, so you can see what the food really turns out like. Homemade burgers are a quick, easy and delicious meal. Because everyone gets to pick and choose you can cover a range of flavour bases and keep everyone happy! How do you do yours...?
If you've been meaning to catch up with your girlfriends (and possibly their partners and kids...) for a bite to eat, why not make a special occasion of it by inviting them around, making the burgers together and then polishing them off over a few glasses of "Coke Zero". Homemade tasty wedges definitely recommended!
Editor’s Note: Homemade hamburgers are quick, easy and filling, and are a good meal for households full of picky eaters! If you're on dinner (or weekend lunch) duty, prepare a smorgasboard of topping treats to go in the burgers and let everyone make their own combinations. Time to prepare: Ready pronto! Provided you've got all your ingredients on hand, this meal can be whipped up in a hurry - or prepared earlier if you're having guests over so that all you need to do is flip the patties and toast the burger buns! The $$$: Like the sushi, this meal is as expensive as you want to make it really! To keep costs down, buy seasonal salad ingredients so that you don't pay through the nose for tomatoes in winter. However, we recommend only using premium beef, it's not worth the sacrifice! Taste rating: Delish! These bad boys went down an absolute treat in the office - a satisfying meal that hits the spot! Ingredients (Click here to purchase these ingredients now!) Serves 4-6 Homemade Burgers
Pack of 8 burger buns 600g premium minced beef 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (use old bread!) 1 red onion, diced 1 cup tomato sauce 1 tsp dried oregano 1 tsp dried sweet basil Yolk of 1 egg Olive oil to fry Toppings
We used: Tasty cheese, sliced and cooked onto the patties Tomatoes, sliced Mesculin salad leaves Avocado Mayo We also like: Beetroot slices (from tin) Sliced red onion Fried egg Bacon Carrot, grated Steps 1: In a bowl, combine the mince, breadcrumbs, onion, 1/2 cup of the tomato sauce, oregano, sweet basil and egg yolk. Using your fingers, mix everything together (remove your rings, mince doesn't smell great after a few days!). Wet your hands, so the mixture doesn't stick, and form the mince into balls, then flatten into patties. At this stage you can refrigerate them if you wish. 2: If you're ready to get cooking, heat up olive oil in a pan. You'll know it's ready to add the patties if once you add a diced piece of onion it starts to splutter! Add the patties to the pan and fry for a couple of minutes each side, so that they're cooked on the outside, and the juices begin to run clear if you press on them! 3: While this is happening, you can grill the burger buns in a 170°C oven for 5-6 minutes. If you want to add cheese to the buns during this process, this can be extra yummy! 4: Assemble the burgers. Start with a bun each, add your toppings (avocado, mayo, lettuce, tomato etc) then patties and some good ole tomato sauce. Enjoy! These burgers are delicious served with potato salad or homemade wedges! Enjoy with mates and a glass of "Coke Zero"!
It doesn't matter if it's quick weekday dinner, or a weekend brunch with your mates - whatever you're eating, whoever you're eating with, make it more than a meal with "Coke Zero"! Tee and Jo
