After months of searching, Australia has finally found the one dancer they truly do believe can dance – Jack Chambers!
The Broadway wannabe hotfooted his way to the crown as we watched last night’s gripping finale of So You Think You Can Dance.
Not only has the 19-year-old scored the honour of beating thousands of other dance hopefuls, but he’s won the wicked grand prize of $200,000 and a ‘money-can’t-buy’ dance training experience in Los Angeles! We had an exclusive chat to Jack about his amazing win and future plans, and we chatted to runner-up Reese about makeup and style! We love these Aussies boys! WINNER Name: Jack Chambers Age: 19 Hometown: Brisbane Dance style: Hip Hop Congratulations! How are you going?! Thank you! I’m good… I’m quite overwhelmed. This is going to take a while to sink in! But it’s good to have the show over, so now we can start to get on with our lives… I’m so excited!
Were you expecting to make it so far? No, I didn’t really think about it. It didn’t feel like a competition to me, there were no competitive attitudes, which was good. I didn’t think I would win because everyone else was just so good! I never knew what Australia was going to vote for or what they wanted, so no, there was no way that I was expecting this! Have you celebrated yet?
Not exactly! We’ve been so busy with interviews and stuff, but we’re having a party tomorrow night for the top twenty finalists. And when I get back to Brissy I’m planning on having a bit of a get together with my family and friends - which I’m really looking forward to.
What are you going to do with all prize money?! I’m not quite sure, I’m going to be quite smart about it. I’m not gonna go and waste and it all, that’s for sure! I really want to live in New York and get into Broadway, it’s been my dream since I was a little kid – so it’d be great to use the money to buy an apartment in New York! So what’s going to happen from here?On Sunday me and some of the others are attending the Logies (Australian television industry awards), which I’m really excited about. Then I go home to Brisbane, and I’m going to try and have a little bit of a break! Then we’re going on a So You Think You Can Dance tour across Australia, and then I’m off overseas – which is going to be such a unique opportunity! What’s your fav song to dance to? One of my fav artists ever is Beyonce – I love her, and I go absolutely crazy whenever I hear ‘Crazy in Love’. Who did you think was the hottest person on the show? Everyone was gorgeous, but I have to say that for a b-girl, Demi was quite hot! Any crazy fan moments yet? When I'm out and about it’s really weird to have people just stare! It’s strange because it wasn’t the way that it was before hand. There were a few obsessed fans who gave me gits and would come along to every show. They’d just scream, and it’s so weird because I’m like ‘Hey, I’m just normal, just like you!’. So you'd better watch out when you go out, you might get attacked by the girls! (Laughs) Ooh I don’t want to go clubbing and get mobbed! RUNNER-UP Name: Rhys Bobridge Age: 26 Hometown: Adelaide Dance Style: Modern Jazz/Club Freestyle Congratulations on making it so far! How are you? Aw thank you! I’m feeling absolutely elated! It’s all been a bit of a media frenzy, but I’m doing great and I’m really proud of myself! Have you celebrated yet? Well, a little bit after the show. I went out with a few friends and family, and we started popping some bottles and had a bit of a boogie (laughs). I’m hoping that when I get to back Melbourne I’ll be able to have a bit of a celebration!
What are your next plans? Well I’m not really sure! What is for certain is that the top four are going to the Logies. Over here it’s a bit of a glamorous big red carpet event, so I’m excited for that! Then I’m going on the national tour with the So You Think You Can Dance guys. Is the tour coming to New Zealand? Oh no! I don’t think so! Damn! We’d love you guys to come over! Well I’d love to come over as well! Fav memory from the entire experience?I had the most amazing feeling in the grand finale, when Jack and I were the final two and we got to perform a final routine together. There was no pressure involved and the comp had practically ended so it was just all about the dancing, which was great.
Were there any diva moments behind the scenes? Not really. I feel guilty actually - I wish there was more to say, but there really wasn’t! Everyone got along and there was no bitching. How are you friends and family feeling? My friends and family are lapping it up – my dads got an amazing response. He’s a little celeb in his own right! They are all just so proud and love all that I’ve achieved.
Fav song to dance to? ‘Groove Is In The Heart’ gets me going! What are your top 3 makeup tips? (NB: Reese is a fab drag queen and worked as a makeup artist for MAC so he knows a thing or two! Anya, our fashion and beauty editor loves him!)
1: There is no such thing as natural 2: There is no such thing as too much 3: Never leave the house without mascara. I love Zoom lash by MAC. Ramarea
