Our favourite Friday and Saturday night obesssion, So You Think You Can Dance Australia is getting down to the pointy end of the competition!
On Friday we were dazzled by the top eight performers, watching as they got down and dirty and strutted their stuff. Although we love ‘em all, it is of course a competition and on Saturday night we said goodbye to the fiesty Rhiannon and the hilarious Henry. We had a chat to the two to find out how they’re going and what they have planned next. They filled us in on everything, from nail clipper dramas to Michael Jackson fetishes, and even who they think will win… Name: Rhiannon VillarealAge: 18 Dance Style: Jazz Hometown: Leumeah, Campbelltown What was your fav or most memorable experience of the show?
Dancing for your life was always really exciting. You’re on the spot and you don’t know what’s gonna happen next – whether you’re gonna stay or go…
What you learnt from this whole experience? I learnt a lot about TV cameras and all that technical stuff. I also learnt you can easily do any style you want if you put your mind to it. I mean who would have thought that I could learn to do the tango in eight hours!
Are surprised to be eliminated? I didn’t want to go but it was getting to the point where anyone could go. This is just the beginning of my career though so I’m still really excited.
Have you thought about what you might do next?Eventually I want a recording contract. I want to be known as a triple threat. I’ve done a bit of hip hop and R & B, have always sung at performing arts school and at the dance studio.
Who do you think will win? I’m hoping for Kate or Graham. I’m really good friends with both of them, and think they are both extremely versatile and bring something different to the competition.
Who did you think was the hottest in the house? Haha, there was too many… I guess all the straight guys!
Any advice for other girls who love to dance? Go for it! Just follow your passion, follow your dreams. Go to dance school and just do it!
Who do you admire most? Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson – they are so talented.
What's your fav way to relax? I love to light some candles in my room, chuck on my PJ’s and watch DVDs! Name: Henry ByalikovAge: 22 Dance Style: Ballroom Hometown: Sydney Why did you decide the enter the competition? I got encouraged by my dance teacher and also my own initiative. I wanted to see if I would be able to mix it up with people who have done diff styles their entire life. It was pretty much a good idea, a good challenge and I was looking forward to show Australia what I can do. The dance you did with Rhiannon last week was amazing! How did it feel? It was lovely; it was a really emotional time. It evoked a lot of feelings inside of me - I recently lost a member of my family. And Kelly Abbey (the choreographer) is just amazing. She’s the type of teacher who can connect you to directly to the dance and helps to bring it to life.
What was the hardest thing about being in the comp for you? The hardest thing was not having nail clippers! I didn’t have any nail clippers, and I had to keep sneaking into the wardrobe and using scissions to cut my nails!
Are surprised to be eliminated? Not really. I had a 25% chance of leaving, which was a big enough chance. I think everyone is on a level playing field so I wasn’t surprised to go at all.
Have you thought about what you might do next? I’ve got a few things in mind and of course I want to continue to explore all sorts of dancing. I actually enjoy acting and want to start doing some courses and stuff. I’m also interested in modelling, and want to look into writing a book on my experiences. This sort of opportunity only happens once in a lifetime so you need to make the most of every second. You began the show with a long ponytail – now you've got short hair! Why did you decided to go for the chop? For me it was a long time coming. I’ve secretly wanted to cut my hair for a long time, but was a bit scared to do it. I was a short hair man at heart, in a long haired man’s body. I’m loving the short hair!
What’s your fav song to listen to before you go out? I haven’t listened to songs in so long! Hmmm it would have to be Flo-Rida featuring T-pain ‘Shorty Got Low’… (Starts singing) “Apple bottom jeanssss, boots with the furrrrr…” Remember, there are still six amazing dancers left in the compeition pitting it out against one another! Keep your eyes peeled on So You Think You Can Dance as the competition gets closer to the final line by tuning into TV3 on Friday and Saturday nights at 7.30pm. Click here for more information.
