Wellness in Your Forties

Sarah, 42, Marketing Manager

My Routine

I walk the long way to work and back every day.  I like to fit exercise into my day and try to walk anywhere that I can, I avoid using my car and always take the stairs.  Walking has always been my favourite thing.  I hate the gym.

I sleep about eight hours per night.  I go to bed about 10.30 and wake up around 6.30 or 7 during the week.  I always try to get enough sleep, if I have a few late nights I start to feel really fatigued and that affects my moods - I get short tempered and vulnerable.

I eat at least five pieces of fruit every day which is pretty much my breakfast.  I try to avoid bread, grains and anything baked. I take my lunch to work and eat heaps of nuts.  I eat salads and vegetables at night with tuna, salmon or sardines.  I eat heaps of lentils, chickpeas and pulses.  I’m not a vegetarian and I do eat a steak occasionally. I don’t take supplements of any kind other than ginkgo to help my circulation in the winter. I don’t drink any alcohol, I drink at least 8 glasses of water a day and I try to stick to one coffee first thing in the morning.

I am very in tune with my body and I know when something is up.  I am a very healthy person, I have good genes and I do look after myself now. I have not always looked after myself very well in the past and I hope that I haven’t caused myself any significant health issues.  At my age, I need to look out for osteoporosis and am probably approaching the time of menopause but I trust how I feel and I would be straight to the doctor if anything felt out of whack.

Nutrition and Supplements
Dr Tony Edwards, Wellness Director at Radius Pharmacy recommends that every girl, no matter what their age, should be eating a variety of healthy foods within a well-balanced diet. You should try and achieve at least 3 servings of vegetables, at least 2 servings of fruit, up to 6 servings of whole-grain foods, no more than 1 serving of lean red meat, no more than 2 servings of fish, poultry or eggs, up to 3 servings of nuts, seeds and legumes.

Dr Edwards also warns against meal-skipping – whether you miss the odd meal here or there or just graze throughout the day. He says these habits can lead to the storage of fat at the next meal, because the body sees a missed meal as a sign of starvation and will store as much fat as possible as a survival mechanism. Also, when you miss a meal, you miss out on the nutrients that help keep you alert and able to concentrate!

We recommend:
Multi-vitamin:  Kordel’s Women’s Multi Kordel’s Women’s Multi Plus EPO
A one-a-day formula designed to support general health and combines specific nutrients in one easy-to-swallow tablet. This comprehensive formula provides essential nutrients including B-Complex Vitamins, Calcium, Iron, Folic Acid plus Selenium and Evening Primrose Oil you need every day for optimum health and energy.

Fish Oil: Natures Own Fish Oil 1000mg
EPA (found in fish oil) helps to limit production of Arachidonic Acid, which contributes to inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis and dandruff.  Essential Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids promote healthy skin.  It’s also beneficial for improving skin moisture and may reduce premature wrinkles. The odourless formula is easily absorbed and does not leave a fishy aftertaste.

Anti-oxidant: Thompson’s Anti-oxidant ACE
Take daily to reduce free radical damage from stress, diet and environmental pollutants. The vitamins A C and E, are thought to protect the body against the destructive effects of free radicals. Some recent research links destructive free radical effects to heart disease and cancer.

Joint Health
Joint problems are often thought to be the result of normal wear and tear but there are things you can do to minimise and prevent joint damage. A balanced nutritious diet, regular exercise and healthy body weight are important to help prevent loss of mobility and maintain joint health

We recommend:
Pain Relief:  Panadol and Zostrix
Joint Mobility: Nutra-Life High Potency Joint Care capsule

If you do suffer from joint pain, consider taking Panadol® Tablets to relieve everyday pain. You can also try Zostrix, a cream that you rub onto sore joints and can provide significant pain relief in the first week. Also consider, Nutra-Life High Potency Joint Care capsules which support the natural formation of cartilage and connective tissue needed for healthy, mobile joints.

Menopause

Menopause is part of the passage through life, and a time where many women may needMenopause is a normal biological transition that occurs naturally in women between the ages of 40-55 years of age. A range of physical and psychological signs and symptoms generally accompany it. In some women they are very mild while in others they are more severe. supportive treatment.

We recommend:
Test: Promensil
Regulate: Kordel’s Meno-Life

We recommend tackling menopause in a well-balanced manner with a supplement such as Kordel’s Meno-Life 24 Hour Menopause Relief, a two-part herbal capsule that provides both day and night time support for the body.

Bone Protection: Nutra-Life Super Calcium Complete
Hormone Balancer: Kordel’s EPO
