Health & Fitness
Wellness in Your Thirties

Mahani, 32, Designer

My Routine

I have a personal trainer gym session for half an hour on a Tuesday morning! Keeps you motivated! I used to do more workouts, but I find I run out of time to fit it all in...

I like my beauty sleep. At the moment I tend to read then sleep at about 10pm, waking up at 7am. I'm a pretty deep sleeper too.

Normally I have a good breakfast of milo and a bowl of muesli or porridge if its colder weather. I do like to add a banana for breakfast. I usually have a multivitamin, and at the moment have an extra B vitamin. During winter, I find having a fish liver oil staves off all colds! I normally eat a rice based meal at least twice a week, and have at least 2 vegetarian based meals a week. I try to eat fish, chicken or red meat for two of my weekly meals. I'm lucky I don't normally have too much of a sweet tooth, and I don't tend to snack between meals.

I go to the doctor when I'm sick, and have womanly check-ups when I'm told to.

Nutrition and Supplements
Dr Tony Edwards, Wellness Director at Radius Pharmacy recommends that every girl, no matter what their age, should be eating a variety of healthy foods within a well-balanced diet. You should try and achieve at least 3 servings of vegetables, at least 2 servings of fruit, up to 6 servings of whole-grain foods, no more than 1 serving of lean red meat, no more than 2 servings of fish, poultry or eggs, up to 3 servings of nuts, seeds and legumes.

Dr Edwards also warns against meal-skipping – whether you miss the odd meal here or there or just graze throughout the day. He says these habits can lead to the storage of fat at the next meal, because the body sees a missed meal as a sign of starvation and will store as much fat as possible as a survival mechanism. Also, when you miss a meal, you miss out on the nutrients that help keep you alert and able to concentrate!

We recommend:
Multi-Vitamin: Kordel’s Women’s Multi Kordel’s Women’s Multi Plus EPO

This comprehensive formula provides essential nutrients including B-Complex Vitamins, Calcium, Iron, Folic Acid plus Selenium and Evening Primrose Oil you need every day for optimum health and energy.

Fish Oil: Natures Own Fish Oil 1000mg
EPA (found in fish oil) helps to limit production of Arachidonic Acid, which contributes to inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis and dandruff.  Essential Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids promote healthy skin.  It’s also beneficial for improving skin moisture and may reduce premature wrinkles. The odourless formula is easily absorbed and does not leave a fishy aftertaste.

Anti-oxidant: Thompson’s Anti-oxidant ACE
Take daily to reduce free radical damage from stress, diet and environmental pollutants. The vitamins A C and E, are thought to
protect the body against the destructive effects of free radicals. Some recent research links destructive free radical effects to heart disease and cancer.

Stress & Insomnia
There are so many things we try to fit into everyday from our career, to our relationships with our partner, families, big events the works. It can all too easily spiral out of control and even the smallest things seem overwhelming! Luckily there are many positive steps you can take to help minimise and protect you from the harmful effects of stress and anxiety and cope with
life’s ongoing challenges.

We recommend:
Stress: Blackmores Executive B Stress Formula
Sleepless Nights: Clinicians REM Sleep Capsules

Try slow, deep breathing, meditation, and relaxation techniques. It is also important to exercise to help relax your mind and to get enough rest so your body can cope. Don’t forget to laugh, as laughter releases endorphins, our feel good hormone.

Sometimes, stress can come from or lead to problems with sleeping. Do you feel as if you’re getting as much sleep as everybody else, but you’re still waking up tired? Do you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep once you do? You’re not alone. We are continually stressed and running short on time. Try to go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each day — even on weekends.

Detox
Feel like your body just needs a good clean out?

We recommend: Blackmores 10 Day Detox Program
The Blackmores 10 Day Detox Program is based on the naturopathic belief that health problems may be caused by the digestive system not working efficiently and so their program is designed to act quickly to eliminate toxins and improve digestive function. The program targets five main organs and works in five ways to help the entire digestive system function as it was designed to, assist sluggish liver function, help to maintain optimum levels of friendly intestinal bacteria, gently help cleanse the bowel and assist removal of dead skin cells and stimulating blood flow to the skin surface

Conception & pregnancy
For most of us, it can seem like we’ve spent our whole adult lives trying very hard NOT to get pregnant! While trying to get pregnant is an exciting time for you and your partner, fertility varies from person to person and at different stages of our lives. For professional advice specific to your situation, talk to your Radius Pharmacist.

We recommend: Elevit
Remember to think about preparing your body for the new little person about to grow inside with a supplement such as Elevit. It contains folate and iron for energy, contains important vitamins and minerals for mother and baby and can be taken any time of the day.
