Health & Fitness
Wellness in Your Twenties

Aleisha, 22, Public Relations Consultant

My routine
Pilates is fabulous!  When I have the time I like to fit a session in 2-3 times a week – home DVD is the best way for me as it allows me to choose any time of the day or night! Also as I am often working long hours with full-on weekends it is important to multi task my exercise routine – so I’ll swap a coffee with a friend on a Saturday morning for a walk with a friend on Saturday morning – perhaps followed with a coffee.

I also walk with the girls at work during lunch times – a great way to switch off when work is busy and refresh for the afternoon ahead!

During the week I try my hardest to get eight hours sleep a night (10.30pm – 6.30am if possible) - however this usually goes out the window on Friday and Saturday nights! Thank goodness for Sundays.

With my diet, I believe everything is ok as long as it’s in moderation! I supplement this with a daily dose of Vitamin C and Iron tablets such as Iron Melts

Nutrition and Supplements
Dr Tony Edwards, Wellness Director at Radius Pharmacy recommends that every girl, no matter what their age, should be eating a variety of healthy foods within a well-balanced diet. You should try and achieve at least 3 servings of vegetables, at least 2 servings of fruit, up to 6 servings of whole-grain foods, no more than 1 serving of lean red meat, no more than 2 servings of fish, poultry or eggs, up to 3 servings of nuts, seeds and legumes.

Dr Edwards also warns against meal-skipping – whether you miss the odd meal here or there or just graze throughout the day. He says these habits can lead to the storage of fat at the next meal, because the body sees a missed meal as a sign of starvation and will store as much fat as possible as a survival mechanism.

We recommend:
Multi-vitamin & Anti-oxidant:  Nutra-Life Active Women’s Multi
This is a high-strength supplement, formulated for the special needs of active women as a general tonic to provide the vitamins, minerals and herbs required when your current diet is inadequate. For women of all ages, a multivitamin is great because it aids in the maintenance and improvement of general well-being.

Fish Oil: Natures Own Fish Oil 1000mg
EPA (found in fish oil) helps to limit production of Arachidonic Acid, which contributes to inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis and dandruff.  Essential Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids promote healthy skin.  It’s also beneficial for improving skin moisture and may reduce premature wrinkles. The odourless formula is easily absorbed and does not leave a fishy aftertaste.

Iron: Iron Melts or Thompson’s Organic Iron
If you’re feeling tired, low on energy or your concentration span is short, you may be iron deficient.  To avoid becoming iron deficient, make sure you include iron rich foods in your diet (like lean red meat, fish, dried fruits such as prunes, figs and raisins and your greens like spinach, silver beet and lettuce).  While there are a range of supplements you can take, the best way to be certain you have an iron deficiency is through a blood test from your doctor.  Your doctor will then advise what the best course of action is for you.

Stress & Insomnia
There are so many things we try to fit into everyday from our career, to our relationships with our partner, families, big events the works. It can all too easily spiral out of control and even the smallest things seem overwhelming! Luckily there are many positive steps you can take to help minimise and protect you from the harmful effects of stress and anxiety and cope with life’s ongoing challenges.

We recommend:
Stress: Blackmores Executive B Stress Formula
Sleepless Nights: Clinicians REM Sleep Capsules
There are so many things we try to fit into everyday from our career, to our relationships with our partner, families, big events the works. It can all too easily spiral out of control and even the smallest things seem overwhelming! Luckily there are many positive steps you can take to help minimise and protect you from the harmful effects of stress and anxiety and cope with life’s ongoing challenges.

Try slow, deep breathing, meditation, and relaxation techniques. It is also important to exercise to help relax your mind and to get enough rest so your body can cope. Don’t forget to laugh, as laughter releases endorphins, our feel good hormone.

Sometimes, stress can come from or lead to problems with sleeping. Do you feel as if you’re getting as much sleep as everybody else, but you’re still waking up tired? Do you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep once you do? You’re not alone. We are continually stressed and running short on time. Try to go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each day — even on weekends.

Detox
Feel like your body just needs a good clean out?

We recommend: Blackmores 10 Day Detox Program
The Blackmores 10 Day Detox Program is based on the naturopathic belief that health problems may be caused by the digestive system not working efficiently and so their program is designed to act quickly to eliminate toxins and improve digestive function. The program targets five main organs and works in five ways to help the entire digestive system function as it was designed to, assist sluggish liver function, help to maintain optimum levels of friendly intestinal bacteria, gently help cleanse the bowel and assist removal of dead skin cells and stimulating blood flow to the skin surface

Conception & pregnancy
For most of us, it can seem like we’ve spent our whole adult lives trying very hard NOT to get pregnant! While trying to get pregnant is an exciting time for you and your partner, fertility varies from person to person and at different stages of our lives. For professional advice specific to your situation, talk to your Radius Pharmacist.

We recommend: Elevit and Nutra-Life Omega Science Natal Capsules
Remember to think about preparing your body for the new little person about to grow inside with a supplement such as Elevit and once you’ve conceived keeping up the correct supply of nutrients with a supplement such as Nutra-Life Omega Science Natal Capsules.
