Australia’s So You Think You Can Dance has turned into our latest nzgirl HQ obsession!
We’ve followed the hunt for Australia’s best dancer over the past few weeks (tune into TV3 on Friday and Saturday nights at 7.30pm), watching as thousands of talented Aussie dancers have been whittled down to the top eight! It’s getting down to serious business now and we are so excited – the thrilling moves and sexy shakes just get better each week!
On Saturday we watched as the top ten turned in to the top eight, with the elimination of the gorgeous Jemma and the adorable Anthony. Although we were gutted to say goodbye to two of our fav competitors, we were stoaked to have an exclusive chat to them about life on the show, their next moves, and even their fav party songs! Jemma ArmstrongAge: 20Dance Style: Ballroom/Latin Hometown: Perth Why did you decide to enter this competition? I love the American show – when it came on I thought it was like dance heaven. I remember thinking I wish I could do that. So when they came down to Perth I was always going to enter! What was your fav or most memorable experience on the show? I loved dancing with Reese, he was such a great partner. I’m so glad we were put together! Watching him grow as a dancer was amazing, he just nailed everything. I loved doing the waltz and pase doble with him, it was so beautiful! Are you surprised to be eliminated? No I knew it was coming I had a feeling… But I’m so happy with what I’ve done and achieved. My goal was to make it as far as I could and I have! I’m seriously loving where I am at the moment. You were picked from thousands to be on this show - do you have any advice for standing out in a crowd? For me it was different – I’m like the shy girl. I think I stood out just because they could see how hard I was working and how focussed I was on my dancing, even though I was quiet. Jus be yourself and people will see you for who you are. Do you have any advice for any nzgirls who also love to dance?Never give up on your dream! If you have the heart and passion don’t give up because you can do it and I’m the prime example of that! I thought dancing was going nowhere for me, and then look what happened! What song do you put on before you go out to get you in a good mood? I love so many! But I really do love my Ministry of Sound album – play that and I’m ready to go for the whole night. Being such an intense competition, was there any bitchniess behind the scenes? There were a few conflicts but I stayed out of the loop! But you know, you’re gonna get that when you have a whole lot of people living together. Have you thought about what’s next for you? I’m just gunna wait and see what doors open. I’d love to join Burn the Floor (an acclaimed Australian Latin and Ballroom dance company) and travel the world with them. University was my back up before SYTYCD – back then nothing was happening back in Perth with my dancing and it was breaking my heart! But at the moment I'm happy to just wait and see...
Anthony IkinAge: 26 Dance Style: Acrobatic Jazz/Contemporary Hometown: Gold Coast Why did you decide to enter this competition? It’s the biggest thing that’s happened in dancing here in Australia for years. There was never going to be a moment when I wasn’t going to enter! Any embarrassing moments? I used to split my pants all the time half way through rehearsals… And of course right in the places that you don’t want your pants to split! So it became pretty obvious to everyone that I also have an obsession with colourful underwear! Are you surprised about your elimination? You know once we got in to the top ten we realised that everyone is great at their own thing, and we all fully appreciated that. We don’t know Australian wants and is going to vote for – so I don’t think anyone will be surprised if they get eliminated from now on. It wasn’t a big shock at all. Do you have your next moves figured out?I own a fitness and dance studio on the Gold Coast, and I’m looking forward to going back and teaching all my kids. Plus, since the show business has just absolutely skyrocketed. Who do you think will win? I’m gunna vote Kate – she’s incredible. I just can’t take my eyes off her when she’s dancing. She was also one of my best buds in there. What song do you put on before you go out to get you in a good mood? I’m going to totally embarrass myself and say Mariah Carey! My absolute fav Mariah song is ‘Always Be My Baby’. And I love ‘Touch My Body’, and ‘Honey’ is great too! What have you learnt from the whole experience overall? In the beginning I doubted myself a lot. But this competition has really helped me to get in to the right head space to stop my self-doubt. The biggest break through for me has just been to appreciate what I do and what I bring to the competition. Remember, there are still eight amazing dancers left in the compeition pitting it out against one another! Keep your eyes peeled on So You Think You Can Dance as the competition gets closer to the final line by tuning into TV3 on Friday and Saturday nights at 7.30pm. Click here for more information.
