When it comes to makeup for glamorous occasions, such as weddings, balls and other formal events, most of us are a little clueless... What should you look for in a makeup artist? How do you ensure that your makeup lasts all day (or night)!? What are the key things you should avoid?
There are loads of questions that only a pro should answer – you don’t want to look awful on your wedding day or ball night!
We had a chat with Rachelle Fisher from Phoenix Cosmetics to find out everything we possibly could about looking hot for your wedding, or any other important occasion. From how to tell a makeup artist you’re not happy, to priceless tips on makeup and skincare, we’ve got the lowdown on makeup for formal events completely sussed… What should you look for in a wedding makeup artist? Someone that you get along with and can trust. Doing someone’s makeup for their special day is very personal – artists get right inside your personal space so it is important that you are comfortable with them. It's also a good idea to ask to see photographs of their previous work and possibly a reference from a past bride - lots of artists have websites with all this information. This way you can ensure that they have experience and have a style that you like. What’s the best way to approach things if you're not happy with your look? Be honest. The makeup artist is there to make the day special for you and to make you feel beautiful and confident and if you're unhappy with anything you need to let the makeup artist know. Makeup isn’t permanent, it can easily be changed! What sort of prices can you expect to pay?
Anywhere between $60 to $300 per person. Prices usually depend on the experience and demand of each particular makeup artist. You pay more for experienced artists. You can also do combo deals with makeup artists who also do hairdressing. What's the biggest mistake brides make with their wedding day makeup?Going too natural. It's a special day, you want to look your best! Another one is going for looks that are of the moment, which can date your photographs. It's best to go with a look that you feel comfortable in and that brings out your best features. Should I wear products containing SPF? No - the camera flash will reflect off the SPF, making your face look paler. What can brides do to make sure their makeup lasts the day? When a bride has her trial we recommend that they purchase our invisible blotting powder, which can be used for touch ups throughout the day and before photos to get rid of shine. Also keep your lipstick or gloss with you to reapply throughout the day. What's the best skin prep a bride can do in the lead up to the wedding? Take care of your skin with a good daily cleansing routine, drink lots of water and wear sunscreen! Also any treatments like facials or brow shaping should be done at least a few days before the wedding to give your skin time to recover. And on the day itself?
Try to relax and not stress out too much - have your bridal party do some of the chores for you, so you aren’t running around getting hot and bothered. Use a good cleanser in the morning and use a relaxing and rejuvenating moisturiser before having your makeup applied. What are common makeup issues that occur throughout the day?
Bridal season is at its peak in summer, which means hot sweaty skin and lip gloss that melts. Ask your bridesmaid to carry a makeup bag with her containing your essentials – make it her job to let you know if your makeup is getting shiny or moving. How best to deal with them on the day?Shiny skin can be taken care of with an invisible blotting powder (and powder brush), and carry your lipstick or gloss with you to touch up during the day to avoid dry lips. The best way to avoid running mascara is not to wear it! At Phoenix we do eyelash extensions which thicken and add length to your natural lashes. They look amazing and natural and no mascara is needed! Alternatively wear a waterproof mascara. Any other words of advice? Give your makeup artist lots of advice about what you want and know what you want. Look through magazines and pictures before meeting with them so you have a clear look in mind. Look at the makeup in images, not the model. Wanting to look like someone and wanting their makeup are two different things. The more confident you are with your choice of makeup, the more likely you are to get what you want. Enjoy the day and remember that makeup is just makeup – it's there to make you feel good beautiful!
