Read on to check the nzgirl team’s personal favs from the list… Ramarea, Sub-Editor: Pretty Woman $15.00. Click here to buy nowGrowing up I was always a little mature in my choice of movies – my fav flick at the age of seven was Pretty Woman! The weird thing is that 14 years later, it's still one of my favourite movies! It’s a funky take on the classic romantic fairy tale – after a fair bit of turmoil (ok, a lot… Julia Roberts does play a prostitute who falls for a high flying businessman) the gorgeous girl gets the amazing boy, and the happy ever after ending that she deserves. My perfect chick flick! Julia Roberts and Richard Gere have amazing chemistry on screen and there are loads of laughs (not only from the hilarious script, but also the crazy early 80s/90s outfits!). Amber, General Manager: Amelie $14.99. Click here to buy now
I was absolutely charmed by Amelie so this is my pick for the DVD collection! As well as being beautifully shot, Audrey Tatou is captivating as the lead. It might not sound like it, but this film is one you can even watch with your man (mine loved it!). Amelie is a comedy - the story of a shy, imaginative waitress who sees it as her mission to improve the lives of her customers. However she proves less successful when it comes to bettering her own lot. Amelie (Audrey Tatou) had an eccentric childhood, raised by two equally eccentric parents who overprotected her, believing her (incorrectly) to be suffering from a rare heart condition. As a result, she was held out of school and spent most of her time alone, developing an active fantasy life. It’s a world that’s purely (and slightly perversely) fantasy - a great fairy tale for adults.
Nadia, Account Executive: Little Miss Sunshine $15.00 RRP. Click here to buy nowMy favourite film is undoubtedly Little Miss Sunshine! I’m so in love with this movie - the first, second and even tenth time I saw this film I was in fits of laughter and had a permanent smile on my face. It is based around a crazy, dysfunctional family’s road trip across America. My two favourite family members are the foul-mouthed grandfather who makes you cringe then crack up, and the oh-so-lovable Olive. She has the most awesome little pot belly and is so cute! She puts on the most amazingly funny performance at the end (but I don’t want to give too much away). There is never a dry moment in this family and it is just so shockingly funny (the best kind). It is one of those movies you can watch over and over again, and even if you only have a spare five minutes you can fast-forward it to the end and get that much needed dose of laughter.
Bonnie, Business Development Manager: The Notebook $15.00. Click here to buy nowI never cry. I mean, ever. This movie had me absolutely bawling my eyes out, in a good ‘snotty nose, heart aching with the emotion of it all’ way of course. My girlfriends and I settled down on a grey Sunday afternoon, banished the boys to the pub (not that they needed much convincing to go) and armed ourselves with tissues. It is the most romantic and beautiful story. You totally fall in love with the lead guy, you get so upset when things start to go wrong and the bitter sweet ending will haunt you for days.
Don’t fight the storyline; succumb to the fact that there are love affairs this passionate and memorable out there. This is the ULTIMATE Chic flick. For $15.00 I am actually going to buy my own copy to keep so I can relive it again this Easter weekend. Damn it, I’m glassing over just thinking about it…
Vicky, Account Manager: Transformers $39.99. Click here to buy nowNot exactly a girly choice (typically) but I am prone to enjoy the action movies from time to time. Transformers was one movie that blew me away. The first time I saw this was at the movies with a big group of friends (male and female) and everyone walked out after the movie just raving about how great it was. The technology involved, the impact and intensity of the scenes from start to finish was enough to keep you glued to the screen for the entire movie. There wasn't a single dull moment... For $39.99 this is definitely a worthy investment as a gift for him, or to simply add to the DVD collection.
Sarah, Art Director: Love Actually$15.00. Click here to buy now
Only $15? What a friggin steal! I was really impressed with Love Actually, and to tell you the truth, when I first saw it I didn’t have high expectations.. But after a few minutes I knew it would be one of my favs. Each relationship throughout the story is so different and so interesting to watch. My favourite couple within the movie is Mark and Juliet (Anderw Lincoln & Kiera Knightly). I love the scene when Mark comes to the door and tells Juliet he loves her but can’t be with her, through signs with the words written on them, and all while her new husband is sitting inside! Oh bless… and then she runs out and kisses him! I mean who doesn’t love a cheesey, British romantic comedy!? I have a list of DVDs that I would like in my collection, at the moment there are about 50 I still want! This DVD is definitely on the list! Tee, Editor: Bridget Jones Box Set $24.99. Click here to buy nowIf we were to have a giant nzgirl slumber party, I know I’d be more than happy to attend if everyone brought around their selected DVDs – even more so if there was popcorn and marshmallows involved! My addition to an already top-notch pool of movies is the Bridget Jones box set, a favourite for so many reasons! Of course, there’s the fact that I loved the books and that the plot is based loosely on Pride and Prejudice, another favourite. There’s also the delicious Mr Darcy (what a coup getting the actual, or rather the fourth or fifth resurrection, of P+P’s Mr Darcy, Colin Firth). Then there’s the devilish Daniel, played by Brit-Chick-Flick repeat offender, the suave Hugh Grant. There’s also the backing of the ultimate chick flick soundtrack. And there’s Bridge, played perfectly by Renee Zellweger. Pure brilliance. .jpg) |
