If you and your man need to escape everyday life, why not take a romantic break? It’s the sure fire way to put a bit of spice back into your love life.
And you don’t need loads of cash to treat yourselves either! We’ve pulled together a list of five romantic getaways that will make you and your guy feel like a million dollars, without costing a bomb.
All you need is a free weekend, your man and a whole lot of excitement…
1: Camping This is the best way to make the most of the gorgeous summer weather, take in some of New Zealand’s stunning scenery and spend some quality alone time with your guy, all on the cheap! You can’t lose. Where to go: Pick somewhere with a great beach or gorgeous surroundings, that’s not more than a 3-4 hour drive away (you don’t want to spend the whole time travelling!). We love Raglan, Waipu Cove and Taupo Bay, but there are loads of great places around the country. If you're super campers, try one of the many DOC Campsites around the country which are cheap (but have minimal facilities). What to do: Make the most of the beach and spend time frolicking in the water together - you could even try surfing or snorkelling. Go bush walking, check out the local area, have BBQs and just relax in each other's company. It sounds cheesey but this is also the perfect time to go and have that long, romantic walk along the beach and remember why you two are together in the first place… Aww!
2: Cabins This is a great way to get out of your normal lives and escape somewhere a little more foreign and rural, but it’s not as extreme as camping. You get to enjoy nature, but from the safety of nice room, with a proper bed and electricity! Where to go: Most camping grounds or holiday parks offer a range of cabins. They don’t cost much, and normally come decently furnished. Pakiri Beach Holiday Park (90 minutes north of Auckland) has cabins available for only $25 a night! Think of an area you like and Google it to find great options. What to do: Relax! Take in the sights of the local area, and spend a bit of one on one time with your man. You could go out for dinner, or whip up a romantic treat yourself (Click here for 'Foods to Get You in the Mood'). Then when it gets dark, spice things up in the privacy of your very own cabin… Click here for some inspiration. 3: Day Trips Day trips are a great way to have a whole lot of fun and adventure when you don’t necessarily have the time to go away. A special day trip is still counted as a romantic getaway. Try something a little bit sexy like a trip to a hot pool complex outside of your normal town or city, and watch as the sparks fly! Where to go: We love Miranda Hot Springs (45 minutes southeast of Auckland). Boasting the largest hot pool in the Southern Hemisphere, you can soak up all the revitalising properties of the mineral water and then take a dip in one of the four private spas… What to do: Enjoy it! And definitely book into a private spa - there’s nothing more romantic!
4: Go visiting Ok, so this may not sound very romantic, but if you do it right it can be great! My fav trip with my boyfriend, was when he took me to Turangi to visit his nana. Before you say ‘lameo!’, let me just say that it was so cute! We got to spend lots of time alone and did the coolest things, like playing in the snow at Mt Ruapehu and going off on little adventures. Hanging out with his nana was also fun, it wasn’t like she stalked us! You don't have to be totally alone for a bit of romance. Where to go: To the home of a family member or friend who lives in a cool location and isn't a third wheel (very important!).
What to do: Make the most of the person you’re visiting and spend some time with them - making sure that you two still get a bit of privacy (keep away from pesky hangers-on-ers!
Get alone time with random drives around the area, checking out the local sites and activities. Turangi was great because it was close to Taupo, Hot Pools and Mount Ruapehu (snow is so romantic!). 5: Stay in a hotel This option can be done on the cheap, without forcing yourself in to a grotty hell hole! Inexpensive and very nice rooms do exist and they make a great romantic getaway. After all it’s nice to have a change from your own boring bedroom and stay somewhere new and mysterious… Where to go: The Calais Resort in Mount Maunganui has some lovely rooms available for less than $150! You can find lots more bargain priced (but still very nice) hotel and other accommodation options at www.wotif.com What to do: Definitely take in the sights of the area, but remember that the best parts of this trip will all be located in the bedroom! You need to make the most of your new temporary love nest. Click here for some super spicy ideas… Ramarea
