1. Love yourself and others will follow
You can spend your life running away from your demons, be it a surname like Smooter, a hometown like ‘Porpoise Spit’ or a childhood nickname like ‘Josie Grossie’, but until you face up to who you really are, where you’ve come from and what makes you special, it’s a hard road to finding your happy ending. Remember, before you can truly love someone else, you've got to love yourself.

2. Don’t play games
There are many ways to meet someone special. Sometimes, you’re paid to distract an older sister and sometimes you’re on a tough, undercover journalistic expose. No matter what the situation, it’s advisable not to play unnecessary games or pretend to be someone you’re not in order to win someone over. Chances are you’ll be found out and won't get a rose-tinted ending.

3. The young (foolish) you might not know best
There’s a big difference between how you look at love and life when you’re 18 and when you’re 28. So don’t base the rest of your life on the back-up plans you made when you were younger - like a pact to marry your best mate if you’re both not married off by 30. And don’t assume you have to be married or have achieved the Hollywood ending to be happy.

4. Never underestimate the power of true love
True love, the stuff legends are based on, can surpass all odds if you want it badly enough. As we saw with Allie and Noah, no obstacle, be it university plans, world wars, meddling parents, wealthier partners or dementia can dim the bond of everlasting love, it conquers all. Noah puts it best with, “I think our love can do anything we want it to.”

5. Make the most of other people’s lovefests
If it weren’t for all of the weddings and a funeral that lovable larrikin Charlie had to attend he would have never met or cemented his desire for the bland but beautiful Carrie. Likewise, if Jeremy and John hadn’t developed a taste for the matrimonies of complete strangers, they’d have never met the ‘life-altering’ sisters Claire and Gloria.

6. True love manifests itself in strange packages
We get it, Hollywood has conditioned us to hold out for Prince Charming (handsome, great job or family trust fund, sporting ability etc.) but sometimes you’ve got to dig a little deeper, through green puckery skin, a bad 80s mullet or childlike tendencies to find the object of your future affections. Do not confuse this as advice to pursue flawed men who promise a lifetime of heartache.
