Super Sex Positions!

Just because Valentine's Day is over, doesn't mean the romance of February has to end! Here are our picks of the latest and greatest books to help you celebrate the month of love...

The Clothes on Their Backs, Linda Grant
A powerful and moving account of a young woman growing up in 1970s London, Grant’s book uses clothes to illustrate the true nature of her characters. Vivien is the daughter of two immigrants who fled to London to escape the horrors of World War II, and in exchange for this rescue live quietly. The most important incident in Vivien’s childhood is the brief and boisterous entrance of her Uncle Sándor, who is quickly sent away by her father. Vivien’s rediscovery of her uncle acts as a catalyst for change, as she explores the lies that exist in her family history. I found this book gripping and the author’s motif
of clothes as a guide to personality works well, providing
some of the most descriptive passages. Little, Brown, RRP $38.99.

The Two Miss Parsons, Jill Marshall
This bright and breezy novel centres on the adventure undertaken by newly redundant, single mum Cally and her street-smart nine-year-old daughter Paige, after Paige wishes to meet her dad for her birthday. Cally and Paige take off from London and arrive in Ponsonby, Auckland where Paige quickly discovers that fixing up your parents takes more than a quick birthday wish, as Cally tries to choose between sensible Simon and crazy Alan, Paige’s father. This is a light and entertaining read, and is made more amusing by being set in a location many will recognise. Penguin, RRP $28.

Super Sex Positions, Paul Scott
In the month of Summer Lovin', this little book is the perfect way to surprise your man. From basics to Karma Sutra, all the descriptions are clear and uncomplicated. The cute illustrations mean even those who are a little uncomfortable with reading this type of book won’t be intimidated, whilst the wide range of positions mean there’s something for even the most adventurous. This wee gem would also make a hilarious hen’s night present. Ryland Peters & Small, RRP $19.99.

When the Boys are Away, Sarah Webb
The Irish seem to have a particular talent for writing entertaining chick-lit, with this new title from Sarah Webb better than most of the genre. Meg Miller is a mother of two and girlfriend of Simon, a professional sailor. Having recently moved back to Dublin in order to provide a base for her children, she quickly realises that having Simon come and go is not the ideal arrangement. However, with the support of her unusual family she starts to develop a routine, until Simon decides to move home again and chaos ensues. The many nautical embellishments don’t detract from a great read.
Macmillan, RRP $25.99.

Pick of the month: Things I Want My Daughters to Know, Elizabeth Noble
This beautiful book follows Barbara and her four daughters in the months leading up to and after her death of cancer, as they struggle to deal with their loss. Both funny and tragic, the characters really come alive, making this book impossible to put down. Barbara's letters written to her four very different daughters and her journal, which they are allowed to read only after her death, mean her funny and insightful maternal guidance continues even after death. This book is a must-read - it will definitely give you a renewed appreciation for your
mother. Penguin, RRP $37.
