The Arts Insider: February

From a hot New York poster artist to a website featuring freshly baked muffins - check out the quirky and fun picks Sarah is loving this month...

Inspirational Feature - Tara McPherson

I was sitting in nzgirl's screening of Juno (if you haven't seen it yet - go now, you'll love it!) when the camera moved through Juno's bedroom across the poster filled walls. The posters and illustrations were awesome - a real eclectic mix that some genius art director/set designer must have slapped together. Among the colouful madness I recognised one artist that would have to be one of my favourites, New York's Tara McPherson.

Tara is a painter and poster artist whose portfolio is filled with band posters for the likes of The Hives, Kings of Leon, Razorlight and Green Day. People and their relationships are the central theme to most of her work. She draws on her own life experiences and emotions to create thought provoking and seductive quirky compositions.

I find her work really inspiring for the odd illustration or painting I might be doing in my spare time (what spare time?!), so all you creative nzgirls out there, check out Tara's website here and get illustrating!

Strive Towards Your Destiny
February 2 2008 - March 2 2008
City Gallery Wellington Waterfront
Strive Towards Your Destiny, samples a selection of works by Irene Ferguson, a graduate of the New York Academy of Art, and Arie Hellendoorn and Douglas Stichbury, both recent graduates of Massey University’s Bachelor of Fine Arts. Although the three artists draw their influences from a diverse range of sources, the works share a dry and witty reinvigoration of contemporary painting practice.

My Paper Crane

www.mypapercrane.com
This month I just had to share with you one of my favourite creative websites. My Paper Crane is the site of American Heidi Kenney. She creates and sells all sorts of toys made out of plush. The site is updated regularly and my favourite part is her personal blog, where she posts quirky day to day events, new toys or artworks or even pictures of muffins she has just finished baking. It's light and refreshing and will get your creative juices flowing!
