It’s not hard to be kind. In fact being kind is almost easier, not to mention a lot more rewarding, than turning a cold shoulder.
All it takes is a little effort and thought, and you’ll be spreading the love faster than a chocolate bar can melt all through your handbag on a hot summer's day... Compliment If you like that girl’s dress or another girl’s hair then tell her! Everyone loves a little ego stroke and by passing on your compliment you have the power to make someone’s day. Turn the tables - how many of your favourite wardrobe items have gained their status by people telling you you look good in them? You begin to equate those comments and those outfits with confidence and subsequently feel good wearing them! That’s not to say you should restrict your pleasantries to clothing, if someone did a good job then tell them and so on. Just don’t be fake about it! Do your bit Never underestimate how much of a difference an hour or two of volunteer work a week will make and how much it will mean to those involved. Giving that time is not only kind, but you’re really putting yourself out there for others, which is a pretty inspiring thing to do! Surprise, surprise We get told when and how to celebrate our friendships and relationships, as well as our families and even our beliefs. We’ve all become accustomed to our birthday and Christmas gifts, our anniversaries and Valentine’s Day, and the ongoing list of commercially induced celebration, which is why taking the time to surprise someone is all the more valued. Showing someone you appreciate them should not be restricted to certain days of the year. So show someone how much you care for no other reason than you want to. This could be as simple as writing a letter to a friend, cooking a nice meal for someone or taking the time out to spend some quality time with someone.
Help de-stress the office Take the weight off around the office by offering to help if someone’s feeling swamped, talking to someone you wouldn’t normally talk to on your lunch break or bringing in vital supplies such as chocolate to keep spirits high. These simple acts of kindness will not only make you the office angel, but keep everyone feeling motivated and happy, which will lighten the mood and make for a nicer office environment.
Listen When someone tells you their name, take it in, when someone tells you their problems, offer support. It’s about listening, being friendly and being thoughtful. People who have mastered this technique have the power to make you feel really special and valued. They bothered to remember you, they bothered to call you to ask how things were going, they listened and they cared - it’s all rather refreshing.
