I like to think of a new year as an opportunity to turn to a fresh page and change up whatever you weren’t entirely pleased with the year before.
You can chuck out the candy bars, the clothes you hate and maybe head off to the gym. But it’s also a huge opportunity to start afresh in the beauty department as well. We guide you through attacking a new year with a new beauty direction... Lash AddictEveryone I know has their own little eyelash ritual, whether it's a favourite mascara, a preferred application or a method of curling them to make them seem fuller. Whatever your own personal ritual, maybe it’s time for a little shake up in the lashes department...
Switch your mascara for a different colour. You could try a safe brown over your normal black or a more vibrant shade like red, blue or the purple tones favoured by Smashbox makeup artists.
Learn how to apply false eyelashes. Whether it be the wild, fun styles or the natural (yet very lush looking) single eyelashes - the choice is yours. They can make a huge difference to your over all makeup look and are a great way to bring colour and interest to the eye area. Need tips? See www.galadarling.com for a great step by step guide. Get a tint. Ok, so it’s not hugely complex, but this will give you a more permanent, striking colour on your lashes. Take the dive and get yourself off to a beauty salon now! Foundation Friendly.jpg) I’m a fan of tinted moisturiser, while others like the dewy complexions or reach for a super matte foundation. Whatever you use or prefer, once you find a product you love, it's hard to let it go. Now is definitely the time to branch out and try something different…
Don’t wear foundation. I know it seems like a big statement but give your skin a rest and put the foundation in the drawer for a bit. You might be surprised how many people prefer the bare faced you. I’m not saying this has to be a permanent thing, but giving your skin a break from foundation is a great thing to do. Especially if you are the kind of person who always wears their ‘face’.
Book a makeup lesson. All those little tips about blending your foundation perfectly, using brushes, getting a great finish (and making sure that you are wearing the right colour) can soon be yours for the taking! If you’re worried about visiting a makeup counter because you’re afraid of being pressured into buying, just use a stand alone makeup artist. We recommend Beauty on Demand, but often your local salon can be really useful with helping to choose someone. Start from fresh. How about you throw away your foundation and primer, and go and get something new. Most of us don’t take into account all the new developments in products and technology that can take place in the space of a year, let alone all the changes in our skin! Lip Lover When I turned 18 a friend of mine (a makeup artist for a well known brand) took my beloved lip glosses off me, and made me choose a new lip colouring that suited my now-adult persona. After I got over being completely livid with her for stealing my collection of Juicy Tubes and Lip Smackers, I got to see her point. Lips are a huge focal point of the face and I, like many other women, had started on the road to ‘buying the same lip product my entire life’. I was definitely in need of a shake up, and maybe now is the perfect time for you to have one too?!
Change your product. Instead of a lip gloss in your favourite colour, why not change it out for a lipstick in the exact same shade. It’s not ground breaking but it might be enough of a shift to get the ball of change going.
Do the full on, correctly applied lipstick look. I’m talking the foundation base, the feather lining, the blotting and the setting powder - the whole shebang!
Do the runway thing. Take a look from the runways and rock it at as your own. This may seem simple, but it’s fairly deceptive, because runway makeup is usually amped and trends like purple or dark black lips (with cherry hued glitter dusted over the top) are not unheard of. Anya Merryfield
