Jump Your Way to Fitness!

Who didn’t love the trampoline as a kid? Playing ‘break the egg’ and trying to double bounce my brother on a hot summer's day bring back great memories for me...

One holiday while staying in a bach with a trampoline I had an ephiphany. I thought to myself; ‘Why did I give this up just because I grew up and got a real job?’.

A quick Google and I found a trampoline club near me, Extreme Trampoline, located in the excellent new Auckland Gymsport facility (but there are other clubs around the country). Although it was scary to go along to something new by myself, the classes are quite small and after a few weeks I’m already beginning to feel like one of the regulars.

What to expect
These are no ordinary backyard trampolines - they have lots of power and some people can jump up to 10 metres high! The instructors have all been bouncing for so long that they seemed to have bypassed the stage of rational fear that grips me now as an adult (but which never seemed to bother me as a kid). Courage is my biggest problem!

Extreme Trampoline has five trampolines and small classes so you generally get more than enough bounce time. In the adults class you set your own goals - whether it be fitness, fun, or trampolining skill - though you’ll find you get all three no trouble! The instructors give you as much help as you could possibly want - I’ve been endlessly helped with my back flips as the photos show (one day I’ll crack it!).

Fitness Factor
Trampolining requires good core, leg and arm strength and the need to squeeze your butt - so it’s a great all round exercise! I admit I’m a lazy nzgirl, and don’t stay for the 15 minutes conditioning training at the end of the class, which targets all those areas. However, I'm sure it would be totally worth it. Bouncing is more taxing than you think - be ready to sweat! If you are after serious fitness let the instructor know, I’ve been tuck-jumping and forward-flipping my way to core strength the last few weeks.

Top Tips
  • Expect a few laughs from your friends. They will most probably have a picture of a little backyard trampoline in their minds - so send them a link to some trampolining videos (Extreme has some good ones on their site, click here). Tell them it’s an Olympic sport and they'll quickly get the picture.
  • Don’t try too hard. I thought I was a total pro, but these are powerful trampolines. Ending up at the A&E after the second week made me learn this the hard way. Trampolining is safe if you take it slow - let the instructor lead you and don’t be too extreme!
