If you love to stretch your cultural muscles and you're always on the lookout for new and cool forms of expression, then this is the place to come...
This month we showcase ermerging artist and nzgirl Myah Flynn, and talk about her award winning talent...
Quick Q&A with Myah Flynn Myah Flynn is a 22-year-old emerging artist who recently won the prestigious Glaister Ennor Graduate Art Award. “It was a real surprise and confidence boost! I was caught completely unaware, just enjoying a summer day of shopping, when I received the phone call. I was a little slow to register what was actually being said.” (Winning piece: 'Arabian Nights', see top right pic)
Myah says anything and everything influences her, but her love for Japan shows strongly in her bright acrylic compositions that feature mythical beasts and humans twisted within surreal landscapes. Myah says she has an interest in “concepts that defy knowledge-based comprehension,” which she has expressed through these imaginative, vibrant and sultry paintings.
Myah grew up in Katikati, and is currently studying at Unitec in Auckland. “It was one of the best things to happen to my student life! First Bachelors, and now Masters. I made life long friends, learnt a great deal and most importantly, realised how seriously I wanted to take my painting career.”
So far Myah has had exhibitions with Unitec, Epsom Grammar, Kings College, Koru Lounge, Cliff McPherson, (Auckland) and Mania Galleries (Whitianga). As for goals and aspirations within her art, she has recently developed a large desire to reach an international market and work her way up to eventually making a living off selling her art, anywhere and everywhere. “It is not an easy task and perhaps a selfish indulgence, but it is my greatest pleasure and I will pursue it.”
It you would like to request a commission or contact Myah to look at a selection of her works available for sale, email her here. | Fulcrum January 18 to February 17 Cable Bay Vineyards, Waiheke Eighteen months in the making, the largest outdoor exhibition of kinetic, or moving sculpture in New Zealand is a must see. Following the landmark independent digital release, where customers could name their own price, Radiohead finally released In Rainbows on CD. "The most heartening thing about In Rainbows, besides the fact that it may represent the strongest collection of songs Radiohead have assembled for a decade, is that it ventures into new emotional territories." The Guardian. Five Stars!
| | | | | | | | | Flight of the Conchords Encore Screening of the Series: 9.30pm on Prime, from Thursday January 31 This was my favourite tv show, and when I found out Prime was replaying the series at the end of the month, I was stoked!. The show follows the trials and tribulations of Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement's digi-folk band as they try to make a name for themselves in their adopted home of New York City. I missed the first and last episode so I can't wait to catch up, in fact I have been thinking about it all morning - I am truely an obsessed fan!
