Want to really make your home feel like your own but don’t have a clue where to start? Interior Designer Natasha McIntosh will be helping you out with monthly tips and tricks to help you make the most of the place you live in.

Think you need more help than an article can provide? To contact Natasha about her services just head to her website www.mcintoshmoormandesign.co.nz

This month it was my mission to show you how to make a bed head. I decided that I didn't just want to make any bed head so I selected a polished waxed linen in taupe and went to see my upholster.

Together Clyde (of RD Furniture in Kumeu, Auckland) and I made this fabulous button detailed bed head for a queen sized bed, which one lucky nzgirl subscriber will win. Just book a bedroom make over with McIntosh Moorman Design and you'll go in the draw to win this stunning bed head.

Making a bed head

What you will require:
1.7m of fabric @ 140w
2 lengths @ 1480 = 65mm x 25mm wood for framing
4 lengths @ 600 = 65mm x 25 mm wood for framing and central uprights
1 x length@ 1435 = 125mm x 25mm wood for wall fixing rail with 45 degree angle on one side
1x length @1265 = 125mm x 25mm wall fixing rail
50mm thick foam
Stapler and staples glue (Ados)
Scrap fabric 1480 x 600 2x 55mm
Bolts to attach to wall
Small panel pins
Hammer

Optional
Self covering buttons
Large needle
String
Tetron Polyfibre

Step 1:
Make exterior frame with the 1480 lengths as top and button rails and 600 lengths as side rails and middle rails.

Step 2:

Take 1435mm length as fixing rail and place 200 from top of frame to top of fixing rail with 45 degree angle facing down.

Step 3
Staple scrap fabric to front of frame. (Pull fabric as tight as possible). Also staple to uprights as this will help keep the fabric taught. Trim edges.

Step 4

Cut foam to approx frame size and then glue the back to the foam and attach to scrap fabric side of frame. Trim foam once attached. Then with 10 - 15mm foam glue around exterior frame work and trim.

Step 5 (optional)
Glue tetron polfyibre to foam. This will create more volume and give it a softer appearance once fabric goes on.

Step 6
Cut fabric 200mm bigger than frame ie: the frame is 1480, so cut fabric 1680 and lay fabric evenly over the foam.

Step 7
Staple fabric to frame. Start in the centre and work out to the corners pulling fabric tightly as you can.

Step 8
Fold the corner and cut away excess fabric. Put staples in the top of the frame work in order to hold the fabric while you are working on folding the corner. Corners take time in order for them to look clean, so don't rush this step.

Step 9 (optional)
Using left over panel pins locate where you would like to place your buttons. We put 2 rows of 5 buttons on ours. Start making the buttons in the middle of the bed head and work out. Having a straight edge will help keep the lines straight. We placed our buttons 250mm from the top of the frame and at 250mm centers. Make you buttons as per the instructions on the packet. Self covering buttons can be found at Spotlight.

Using the string and the large needle, place your buttons where you have marked with the panel pins, use a double slip knot when fixing your buttons and pull the button as tight as possible through with the string.

Step 10
We used a backing fabric to complete our bed head. This hides away all the bits and pieces in the back. As this goes against the wall nobody really ever sees it.

Step 11

Use 1265mm length of wood (45 degree angle side up) with 55mm bolts and attach to wall. We recommend you do this with a level in order to get the head board straight.

Step 12
Place head board on the timber rail and make the bed!
