About You
Never Fail Pick-Up Lines

When it comes to meeting new guys, the holiday season (thanks to all those brilliant Christmas and New Year's gatherings) is the prime time of the year.

To make sure you don’t slip any lame lines while trying to impress a gorgeous stranger, we bring you the low down on pick-up lines; what you can say and what you should completely avoid!

“Hey, your eyes are the same color as my Porsche!”
“If you're going to regret it in the morning, we can sleep until the afternoon.”
“Baby you so fine, I wanna pour milk on you and make you part of my complete breakfast.”

Hmm, what would be your reply? "Go away!"? Or perhaps something a little more blunt? If you’re like most people, eyes (and possibly heads) will roll when a guy pulls out a line like this. So do pick-up lines ever work? And how about us girls using them on guys?

Some lines depend on the outcome you’re looking for. If you’re after a one-night stand, then a cheesy line might help you to find a fellow desperado. But, if you like a guy, or think you would like to get to know him, you may have to try harder…

Pick-up do's and don’ts

“Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?”
First of all, if you are going to try out a pick-up line, consider what would work on you. Avoid clichés, like the above, as instead of having the desired effect - paying the person a compliment - these lines have been so overused on cheesy sitcoms that they actually come out sounding like disses. The guy will think you’re either making fun of him or that you're a complete weirdo.

“Hi, I'm rich. How do you like me so far?”
Talking yourself up is plain arrogant and it also makes you look shallow. Instead of making the person interested in you, these lines assume the object of your affection is just into you for your assets; be they your boobs, your wallet, or your famous friends. Again, if you’re just looking for a cheap thrill, by all means, ask him if his girlfriend is a freak like you. But if not, go deeper.

“If you were a booger I'd pick you first.”
Humour is actually a good opener as long as you have good comic timing. It is possible for a line like this to fall flat - leaving you red-faced. You will know if you can pull it off, and don’t try it without a few back-up conversation starters, just in case his reply is something like…”um, what?”

“Can I buy you a drink?”
Cheesy? Obviously. Over-used? Definitely. However, this line can work. The fact of the matter is everybody likes free drinks. One suggestion is to make some minor changes to the line, to make it seem a little bit like something original. Try - “I was just about to buy a drink, would you like one?” Or, “I was thinking I would buy you a drink…?” Somehow these seem a little less creepy. Once again, if you are just after a hook-up for the night, this is a good line. Otherwise, don’t buy him a drink until you have spoken to him, or he will think you just want sex.

“Do you mind if I sit here?”
This is a good line for long or short term pulling. It gives them an out (which makes it a bit scary). It also gives you an out, because if you decide he’s not your type, you can make out that you just wanted somewhere to sit, and move on. Make sure you don’t sit down and then go silent. Once more, you might need a few opening lines. These can be simple, getting-to-know-you type stuff, like asking about his job. However make sure it is not too open-ended, like “how’s your night been?” Even if they like you, the answer can fall flat, and then it’s over before you know it.

“I really like that shirt/hat/your hair…”
Opening with a sincere compliment is always nice. Make sure it’s well thought-out, otherwise it can sound false. Choose something about him that is different from the next guy, and if he blushes or thanks you, take a seat and keep talking.

“The word of the day is 'legs'. Why don't we go to mine and spread the word?”
Sex sells, but in the case of pick-up lines, it only sells sex. If you want a short-lived fling, go ahead and flaunt it, and be as raunchy as you like.  Whisper in his ear, guide his hands - whatever it is you think will work. Know this though: Not all guys are that easy. Not all guys are sex-addicts. Some of them actually want to meet a girl who shows them substance. In other words, be ready for denial.

Good luck!!
