About You
Top NZ Romantic Getaways

Has it been a while since you and your partner had some quality time together?

A few days away in a beautiful spot is just what you need to recharge your love batteries and reconnect with each other.

We’ve scoured the country to bring you the best spots for a romantic break...

Spending a few days away with your man needn’t be expensive. Load up on delectable food, pack the bubbly and don’t forget some K-Y Brand Sensual Silk personal lubricant to really put the emphasis on romance (we like the warming version because it’s great for massages!). For lots of tips on up the intimacy in your relationship click here

1: PAKIRI BEACH
Only a 90 minute drive from Auckland this hidden gem is an ideal romantic getaway with its pristine scenery, sunny weather and best of all, lack of people! If you’re after one on one  time with no extra distractions, this is the place for you!

Accommodation: There are lots of cute little home stays and cottages within and around the area. Pakiri Beach Horse Rides has a range of accommodation options including riverside and beachside cottages for two, with beautiful views and private beach access! If you’d rather sleep underneath the stars pitch a tent at Pakiri Holiday Park.

Where to Eat & Drink: Take a 20 minute drive to the Leigh Sawmill Café for some of the yummiest wood fired pizzas around. It’s also a popular bar and they host regular live gigs, from some of New Zealand’s biggest names.

Things to Do:

  • Relax on the sunny, secluded, golden beach; maybe your partner can teach you to surf!
  • Take a romantic horse ride.
  • Go kayaking in the estuary.
  • Swim with the fish at the Goat Island Marine Reserve
  • Visit one of the nearby wineries

    2: TAUPO
It’s got all the right elements to make anyone fall in love; the crystal lake, the ice capped mountains and the misty air… Taupo is a beautiful town and the perfect place to relax and unwind with your boy. And if you want a bit of liveliness, a party is never too far!

Accommodation: If you feel like splurging try the Millennium Hotel and Resort. With romantic lakeside views and luxurious facilities such as a “grotto” plunge pool and an award winning restaurant, you might never want to leave the complex! For a more purse friendly option stay at the Great Lake Holiday Park. Try one of the cute, self contained tourist flats, complete with everything you will need for a comfy and relaxing stay.

Where to Eat & Drink: For a sexy, exotic meal head to the Silk Thai Restaurant. There’s nothing more romantic than delicious spicy food paired with a fabulous view across the great Lake! Taupo is known as the trout capital of New Zealand, so be sure to stop by at the Tipsy Trout and try some of the delicious fresh fish dishes. Head to the Bond Lounge Bar for a relaxing drink in a chilled atmosphere. It offers a great selection of wine, beer and cocktails, there’s sure to be the perfect poison for each of you! If you feel like a rowdy night, visit the Holy Cow. There’s a party there every night!

    Things to Do
  • Visit Lake Taupo.
  • Take a trip to the beautiful Huka Falls.
  • Stroll through ‘Craters of the Moon’- a 30 minute walk around bubbling craters, mud pools and stem vents.
  • Have a private spa at Taupo Hot Springs.
  • Walk through the Tongariro National Park.

    3: WELLINGTON
The windy city is a great romantic getaway for those wanting to keep things urban. It’s got an abundance of fabulous restaurants, cafes and bars for you both to enjoy.

Accommodation: For an uber cosmopolitan getaway book one of the many serviced apartments Wellington has to offer. Terrace Heights Apartments have stylish studio apartments which are all private and beautifully furnished.

Where to Eat & Drink: Wellington is a cultural melting pot and boosts a huge range of international cuisines. If you’re after something a bit alternative and ethnic go towards Cuba St. The Flying Burrito Brothers is an awesome Mexican restaurant with over 100 types of tequila! If you want Euro-style food in a more conventional environment, Courtenay Place is where it’s at. For a truly romantic dining experience try Café Bastille, a traditional French bistro, which serves delicious food. At night venture out towards Courtenay Place. Go to Jet Bar for a sophisticated drink or the Lotus Room if you’re after a boogie.

    Things to Do
  • Visit Te Papa.
  • Watch a play at one of the theatres.
  • Enjoy a live music performance.
  • Take a romantic stroll through the Botanic Garden.

    4: WANAKA
For a complete getaway escape to Lake Wanaka. It’s a beautiful, tranquil town that will mesmerise the two of you; the perfect romantic getaway!

Accommodation: There are lots of cosy little hideaways for you and your boy. If you want to be as close as possible to the outdoors stay at the Aspiring Lodge Motel or for indulgent accommodation with breath taking views, try the Edgewater Resort.

Where to Eat & Drink: For a romantic dinning experience head to Missy’s Kitchen Restaurant and Bar and for deliciously fresh seafood visit the Reef Seafood Restaurant and Bar. If you two need a fun night out, make a stop at Shooters Bar. A lively hotspot with a resident DJ, karaoke competitions and plasma screens.

    Things to Do
  • Relax around the Lake.
  • Jet boat through Wanaka River.
  • Sightsee through central Otago.
