nzgirl Picks: Can’t-Live-Without Books

We check out some of the very useful reads that came our way recently. Plus we’re also supporting Breast Cancer Awareness month by reviewing a must-read guide on preventing this disease…
Wellbeing, Lynda Wharton HarperCollins RRP $39.99
Local author Lynda Wharton gives a comprehensive look at holistic breast cancer prevention. Even if you’re not overly concerned about breast cancer, Wellbeing has some excellent advice on maintaining general good health. The book takes a look at how the female body works, and how it’s affected by exercise, alcohol, stress and environmental factors. There’s also a handy A-Z guide of female health conditions. The book is a chatty, easy read that I found completely fascinating. There are no stuffy medical terms or preachy advice in this one. Share a copy with the women in your life.
The MANual, Steve Santagati Allen & Unwin RRP $39.95 I didn’t want to like this book, but it won me over. Steve Santagati takes on a clichéd topic but manages to approach it with humour, style, and a bit of bad-ass sexiness to boot. As a self-confessed serial dater and über Bad Boy, Steve shares his secrets from years “in the field” in an attempt to help us ladies understand guys. His logic is that if we can handle the best of the worst (i.e. a Bad Boy), then the average bloke will seem a hell of a lot easier to bond with. Steve gives insight into how guys think, how to manipulate their weaknesses (in a nice way…sort of), and how to stop a Bad Boy from breaking your heart. Santagati makes the odd sexist remark (his views on makeup and mandatory Brazilian waxing pissed me off a bit) but it’s an amusing read.
Uglier Than A Monkey’s Armpit, Dr Robert
Vanderplank and Stephen Dodson Allen & Unwin RRP $29.99 This wee book wins brownie points on pure hilarity alone. Uglier than a Monkey’s Armpit includes the best curses, put downs and insults from over forty languages. The authors scoured the world in the name of cultural research, and came up with a list of memorable insults - New Zealand even gets a mention with the word “munter”. There’s a nice bit of history at the start of each section, and some hilarious cultural insights. Next time someone bugs me, I’m going to call them a prumphaensn (fart-chicken in Icelandic). Oh yeah.
A Man Is Not a Financial Plan: Investing for Wealth & Independence, Joan Baker Allen & Unwin RRP $29.99 Long gone are the days of women relying on a man for their financial future. Interested in making long-term investment decisions? Then look no further. This is a book of no-nonsense advice for women who want to get ahead financially. Queenstown-based author Joan Baker is a well known financial advisor who demystifies all those confusing financial terms. Her easy-to-read advice is relevant for women of all ages and financial situations. It got me all fired up for investment - give it a whirl.
