nzgirl Picks: Thought Provoking Reads

We take a look at three best-selling novels that will linger with you long after you've finished reading.  If you’re a fan of Jodi Picoult, you’ll love these books.

Nineteen Minutes, Jodi Picoult
Before I received this book to review, I’d never read a Jodi
Picoult novel. People gasped in horror when I admitted this fact to them, and now I understand why. Jodi Picoult is a Bloody Good Writer. Nineteen Minutes is a heart-wrenching journey into the aftermath of a high school shooting spree. After years of torment and bullying, 17-year-old Peter Houghton decides to teach the high school jocks a lesson. His decision sends ripples through his small New Hampshire town, in particular for Josie Cormier, the one girl who could have been his friend. This is a book that casts doubt over what is truly ‘right’ and ‘wrong’. It will make you laugh, cry, and doubt your own values. I found myself getting hopelessly
attached to all the characters - even the one who seems to
deserve my sympathy the least. Read this book.

Body Surfing, Anita Shreve
In Anita Shreve’s latest book, the unlucky-in-love Sydney has been hired as a live-in tutor over the summer, staying with the ever-intriguing Edwards family. Her student, Julie, is 18-years-old and described as “slow” by the aloof and intriguing Mrs Edwards. All goes well until the two Edwards brothers Ben and Jeff arrive. After a surreal night of body surfing, Sydney finds herself helplessly entangled in family business. Can she escape? Does she want to? Shreve keeps the reader slightly detached at all times - we learn so much about the character of Sydney but I never once felt like I ‘knew’ her. Body Surfing is a dreamy, languid sort of read,
but enthrallingly so.

The Thirteenth Tale, Diane Setterfield
Diane Setterfields’s bestselling novel The Thirteenth Tale is
one of the most memorable books I have read in a long time. The novel combines a love of old books, mystery, romance and intrigue, and gives them an entirely modern edge. Margaret Lea is an inquisitive young woman who grew up in her father’s bookshop. When she is invited to meet the legendary author Vida Winter, she cannot resist. Vida commands Margaret to write her biography - a story that Margaret hopes will lead to the famed “Thirteenth Tale”, Vida’s unwritten legacy. From there Margaret spirals into a world of family secrets, of mysterious twins, and topiary
gardens in the moonlight. This is a delightful, quaint read.
