It’s about time - a social network site like Bebo that’s a million times more fashionable and doesn’t scream out your (secret) personal stuff. See why www.flip.com has us, well, flipping.
The skin and bones of Flip are ‘Flip’ books. Basically, that’s just a fancy word for a virtual scrapbook, visual diary, or photo album only limited by your imagination. Flip takes you back to Thursday afternoon ‘cut and paste’ art classes at primary school but this time round with a taste of chic.
A sister site of Vogue and sponsorship by Vera Wang, Flip has more credentials than a ‘fresh’ new emo band using MySpace. This is a great place to spend your lunch break flipping through the world's community of shop-a-holics, designers, photographers and poets. To help us newbies it has a specific style section so you can get straight to the good stuff without too much effort. I flipped out when I saw an up close and personal account of pictures backstage at the recent New York Fashion Week.
Once you are ready to step up to the plate and/or have some hot shots from last Saturday night simply “upload, design and share!” It’s just as easy as real life, if not easier. For starters, you never face that I’ve-run-out-of-glue-for-the-millionth-time scenario. They have plenty of background templates and tiddly bits to make it look glam and personalised. Thankfully, the software is so user friendly even Granny could do it. No geeky HTML codes or foreign Photoshop buttons, oh no, it’s straightforward no frills, but with enough edge to have you thinking “Aren’t I fabulous? I so should have been a designer”.
Your flip account comes complete with all the essential features - a personal profile and mail messaging. Plus it has the social interaction necessities like adding friends and commenting other flip books minus the 13-year-olds just trying to up their view count/ friend count/ comment count/ whatever.
However, there are a few cons. Being in New Zealand, we’re ineligible to enter the cool competitions (a one-on-one with Vera Wang or $25,000 for university fees anyone? I was excited for a moment there). Also, the site has a tendency to lean towards a younger teen demographic but hey, get all your girlfriends addicted and you'll be sweet.
Overall though, I’m still flipping out to Flip with an enthusiastic Borat high five.
