Love your TV a little too much? With the cooler months already on us you have every right to wallow a bit in your coach potato status. In fact we kind of encourage it, given how obsessed we are with the box.
Each month we’ll be sharing our views on the must-watch shows, but we’re sure you’ll have your own opinion, so feel free to email us your thoughts at couchpotato@nzgirl.co.nz.
You can also jump into our forums to share info about your favourite shows with other fans or just have a good rant about twisted plot lines and irritating characters. The big news in TV this week is the launch of TVNZ on demand. A first in NZ, you can download programmes shown on TVNZ from their website. The news is free, but there is a fee for other shows. Local shows (i.e. Shortland St) are available straight away, but for international ones, you need to wait a while. Great news for those on broadband! For more info go to www.tvnzondemand.co.nz
America’s Next Top Model is well underway now, and the twins have grown on me, after an initial period of “What the…”. But how many of us wanted Monique to fall flat on her face? She is definitely the Jade of this season and I'm glad to see her gone. Good to see Nigel’s still hot as ever.
As for LOST, it seems to have ‘lost’ track of its plot, now they’ve included time travel into it. It’s a ploy to make us feel like some questions have been answered, because we’ve seen things tie in, but really, none of the old questions were answered, they were all new ones!
Shortland St is going through cast changes at the moment. Thank God (pardon the pun) that Baxter has gone. I’ve been hoping for months that Claire would go back to how she was pre-he and now she can. But what’s with Kieran? I know he’s supposed to be the latest sex-symbol for the show, but between what sounds like losing his voice due to cold and his strong accent, I can’t understand a lot of what he says. As for Brenda, when she totalled her car, we were hoping she wasn’t dead. Now we’re wondering why we were…And lastly Maia. SIGH.
My favourite show at the mo would have to be Boston Legal. I just love the quirk! And Brad. Geoffrey ‘Mr Dirty Mouth Dirty Pants’ Coho is a good addition, but I can’t get past seeing him on Ally McBeal all those years back. I think it was only a couple of episodes, but the scenes were shown over and over ad-nauseam. I always expect him to break out in ‘the laugh’ (the reason why Ally dumped him – he snorted when he laughed).
I think sitcoms get neglected a bit. For some reason, we usually don’t want to admit we like them, even if we say we watch them. Well, I like Wednesday night’s sitcoms. The War at Home and Three and a Half Men. They’re the kind of good pathetic fun you need to unwind. Have you noticed that all successful sitcoms have one stand-out character who just adds that special touch?
The Cricket World Cup is on at the moment, and Sky Sports is showing Black Caps games. Fair enough, this is NZ, but… how much of the population is made up of other nationalities? There are 3 sports channels, and aside from games in the Black Caps’ pool, there are hour highlight shows of the other games. I am yet to see any of it except snippets on the news. Very disappointed. Surely for such a major event, more could’ve been planned. It’s not like Australia where there is a free-to-air channel with rights and Pay TV gets the leftover scraps.
