If you’re anything like me, you’re sick of the lousy weather and screaming out for summer to roll around so you can flaunt your new bikini.
The sun, the sand, hot guys and that glowing bronze goddess look…what’s not to like about summer?
One scary and simple answer – skin cancer.
You may be thinking; that won’t happen to me, I’m young, I tan, not burn and I wear SPF15. At least that was what I was thinking until my friend was diagnosed with skin cancer. She’s 22, she does tan not burn and she regularly wears SPF 15 sun block. So why her?
It can only take one bad sunburn when you’re a child to significantly increase the risk of getting skin cancer. My friend made me think twice about my bad sunbathing habits. She was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of skin cancer, nodular melanoma, and she had several moles and a lymph node removed to be sure it hadn’t spread. Luckily she got given the all clear, but her chances of getting it again have increased by 20%.
I guess my simple message is, take measures to protect your skin from the sun, cover up, wear a hat, regularly apply a sunscreen and get your tan out of a bottle. There are some great clothes and accessories out there that are hot, yet sun smart.
I personally love a sparkly caftan worn over my bikini, like the Jewel Silk Kaftan from Principals (pictured). It screams movie star, yet provides that extra protection. It’s also a fashion item that has withstood the test of time, so you can be sure you’re onto a good thing.
I also like this straw hat from Just Jeans which has a nice big brim, but if it’s too much for you, go for a simple black cap, like the one in the nzgirl range.
It’s also important to protect the eyes, and you definitely can’t go wrong with a pair of big sunnies.
However, the best thing you can do this summer is tan while you sleep.
No one expects you to go around looking like a ghost all summer long. As contradictory as it is, while a natural tan may be incredibly unhealthy for you, it does tend to make you look healthier!
That’s where wonder products like Johnson’s Holiday Skin come in. The new Night formula of this ever popular fake tanning moisturiser is designed to be used before you go to bed, so when you wake up, voila... Beautifully bronzed skin without an ounce of sun damage.
We’re all for something that keeps us looking good without the threat of skin cancer and wrinkles.
If you need to be in the sun, regularly apply a SPF 30 sunscreen everyday (we like Piz Buin One Day Long Sunscreen for a good dose of protection), not just when you plan to go to the beach. You’ll be thanking your lucky stars when you’re 50 and look 40, because don’t be fooled, sun block is the leading anti-ageing product on the market. Sian Menhinick
