To be honest, babies are a bit of a foreign subject to me.
Sure, I goo and gaa over my workmate’s cousin’s latest arrival as much as the next co-worker, but until now I hadn’t really paid much more attention that that to them. That was until people around me started getting visits from the stork and I realised I needed to find out a bit more.
How do you know what they need for gifts? Where do you get baby gifts from? How long is a trimester? What if you have to babysit? Enter OHbaby!, the perfect site to find out everything baby related.
The Appearance
Decked out in calming baby pinks and blues, OHbaby! is a welcoming and inviting site to spend time browsing through. It covers everything including preconception, pregnancy, birth, babies and then toddlers. There’s an easy to use menu at the top of every page to help navigate and detailed submenus on the left of each section. If you’re a frequent user, there’s also a function that allows you to upload your own baby’s photo so that it appears every time you log in. Nice!
The Content
There’s just about everything an expecting or current mother (and childless friends of aforementioned mothers) could need to know about babies. It really is your guide to pregnancy and parenting in New Zealand. I particularly liked the baby name function, the week-by-week guides so you can track the journey and community section to chat with other Mums. It was also nice to see a special Dad section with tips, FAQs and stories from other fathers. There’s even a baby expectancy calculator which would be useful for any number of reasons, but particularly when gathering evidence to support my theory that Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise’s baby is a sham! Word of warning, if you’re a tad squeamish I suggest keeping away from the birth stories (at least before lunchtime!).
The Extras
I like that the parents-to-be can sign up to receive weekly pregnancy emails, which update you week-by-week on your pregnancy and how your baby is growing. I also came across the “Fun Stuff” section, which lists heaps of games and activities. My favourite has to be the play dough recipe:
Heat 1 cup plain flour, 1/2 cup salt, 1 tbsp oil, 2 tsp cream of tartar, 1 cup of water and food colouring in a saucepan, stirring regularly until the mixture forms a firm ball. Leave to cool and store in an airtight container.
