I don’t usually pay attention to self help books for heartbroken females.
They always seem to say move on, plenty more fish in the sea; or the more brutal “He’s just not that into you”. Rarely does anyone look at breaking up with a sense of humour.
This is why Anna Jane Grossman and Flint Wainess’ new book It’s NOT me, it’s YOU is so refreshing. It’s a complete guide to break-up survival with a smile. The book articulates the ins and outs of every break-up situation, including some I didn’t know existed.
Part one explains the process of ‘getting ready for goodbye’ with signs to look for, types of break-ups, and where you should do it.
Part two is a guide to the break up itself, including a glossary of break-up terms, dividing up the ‘post-break-up booty’, the best break-up lines and what men and women really mean by, “It’s not you, it’s me.'.
Part three explains how to ‘get over it’ - the stages of grief, how to handle being single again, alongside inspirational quotes and lyrics.
The book becomes a journey, and as you reach the end you can fill out a burn book of your exes, putting your break-ups to rest. Stories of ‘my worst break-up’, quizzes and fact files are scattered throughout, making the book interactive and entertaining.
The contrast of male and female perspectives is hilarious and insightful. I couldn’t help but laugh, even when some of the situations were painfully close to home.
However, behind the humour, It’s NOT me, it’s YOU carries the message that break-ups only affect us as much as we let them. If you have been holding on to the demons of a bad break-up, this book will help you set them free.
Despite my opinion of self help books, I took more than a little advice from this one. After all, if you can laugh at yourself, you’re halfway there. It’s NOT me, it’s YOU is engaging, and worth a look if you have ever experienced a break-up- whether you’re over it or not!
