Once thought of simply as a way to protect the eyes, sunglasses are now a major fashion staple and the perfect finish to a summer look.
With trends ranging from oversized Hollywood inspiration to runway ready chic, there is something for everyone.
The easiest way to choose a pair of sunglasses that suit you is to first figure out what kind of face shape you have. To compare your face with the descriptions below simply tie or pin your hair back and look at your face in the mirror. If you have trouble, draw an outline of your face on the mirror with lipstick and then go from there.
Oval face - An oval face is a balanced face. The chin will be slightly more narrow than the forehead and those with an oval face normally have high cheekbones. Round face - A round face is full with very few angles and often the width is equal to the length. Square face - A square face will have a wide chin, broad forehead or strong angles in the forehead and chin. Heart face - A heart shaped face typically has a wider forehead and high cheekbones which taper down to a smaller chin
Huge Huge Huge Mary-Kate and Ashley started the trend with a love of vintage Chanel sunglasses, which quickly spread within the celebrity set amongst the likes of Nicole Richie and Britney Spears. A huge trend for summer 05/06, oversized sunnies are round or square and simple. Look for a plastic pair in one colour with smokey lenses in either grey, brown or purple. Skinny frames give them a quirky edge and stop them from detracting from your face by keeping the look balanced. They are a great choice for those with square and heart shaped faces as they soften hard lines and balance the face. A more square looking pair will compliment oval and round faces by introducing lines and structure. We love the pictured Supa Dupa sunglasses from Dita, a favourite amongst the rich and famous. The smokey lenses and black and white contrast frames are simple, chic and stylish. Available from www.mycatwalk.com.au.
Eighties Sexy 1980s party glamour is everywhere at the moment and it’s no wonder the trend has overflowed into eyewear. Eyewear of the 80s is a great summer party look and a good choice for the trend conscious fashion follower. Currently being worn by the likes of Madonna, 1980s inspired sunglass trends are broken into two groups - white touches and shield. Aviators, oversized sunglasses and square frames in thick white frames are a great choice for heart shaped or narrow faces, or those with darker skin. The more popular shield style sunglasses, comprised of a goggle like design with no break in the sunglass lense over the bridge of the nose, are great for oval, heart and square faces whilst round faces benefit from more angular styles. I love the pictured playful pink shield sunglasses from Vogue Eyewear, which would look fantastic against tanned mid-summer skin.
Vivacious Vintage When Audrey Hepburn and Jaquie O made thick framed wrap-around sunglasses the style du jour little did they know that in 2005/6 they would still be going strong. A huge trend for summer, these stylish sunglasses are the epitome of chic and will be as fashionable next summer as they are now. Choose from traditional black frames and smokey lenses, or opt for lighter tones in brown, rose or charcoal grey. They are perfect choices for round faces as they give the face angles and lines. Rounder styles suit square faces and light tones look great on those with oval or heart shaped faces. The pictured classic rim sunglasses from Christensen Copenhagen will see you through this summer and those to come in style. Available from mycatwalk.com.au.
Squared Up Rectangle and square shaped sunglasses give a sleek, sharp and chic look. They are great for wearing during office hours along with a little black dress or sharp suit. The look is straight off the streets of Miami and a favourite with the likes of Paris Hilton. These do it all sunnies are classics and will be as popular next season as they are now. To get a point of difference simply go for a fun colour or print. We like the pictured Vogue 2355 sunglasses available from Sunglass Hut. A great choice for round and oval shapes, they help balance the face by introducing width at the temples.
Aviator There’s a reason why aviators return season after season as a must-have for summer. Whilst it’s true they are super stylish and an affordable sunglass choice, the reason why people love them is because they are so easy to wear. The light metal frames make them comfortable whilst still being durable, and they cross easily from day to night. This season aviators are sleek and simple with silver frames and smokey grey, brown or purple lenses. Oval and square shapes are available but the hottest looks all feature the cross nose bar at the top of the lenses. Currently the favourite style of Angelina Jolie, these sunnies are perfect for oval and heart shaped faces. A rounder pair is a good choice for square faces. We like the pictured titanium framed flight glasses from Dita Sunglasses. The thin shiny frames add a bit of sparkle yet do not ‘cut up’ the face while the smokey lenses are simply laid back cool.
